A Sadistic 'Would you Rather...' (not for squeemish!)

Post by Diamond Dave » Wed Dec 14, 2011 9:23 pm

Hope that 'Not for the squeemish' warning didn't come too late!
It's not too late to close the page though!

Around the same time as I had an accident, a good friend of mine and companion on many a boating trip posted a picture on facebook.

We're both pretty keen on our legs, and they usually do us well on the long walk-ins we've had together in Siberia, Mongolia and more recently Tajikistan:
Image

Deep in pensive thought, it got me pondering...
Would you rather have:

a)
10 days later:
Image

OR

b)
10 days later:
Image

Obviously you'll want more information.
That'll come later.
But whats your initial assessment?!
I know my answer!

[Both models are going to live to tell the tale!]

I will say 'B'.

I don't know the injury, it doesn't look (?) like frostbite, I'm guessing maybe the odd busted bone in the ankle, amongst other things? I think it wouldn't have been this bad if the casualty has been wearing a full face helmet...

B looks more like (really) painfull (frostbite? burn?) rather than being 'structurally' limiting, so I think I'd go for that... Bit of Jaeger and you're good to go again (maybe...)!

My first thought was cutaneous anthrax, but if so b) would have been a huge infection.

Is b) what happens if you don't wash your paddling boots often enough??

Get well soon to both of you - neither looks particularly pleasant!

'B' looks like some nasty spider bite?
Not sure which I'd rather have though, 'A' would probably heal back to normal much quicker if 'B' is what I think it is.

For b) I had something similar playing football, I landed on my ankle sideways with all my weight and tore the ligament. The pain for the next 3 days was unbelievable. The hospital didn't do much just told me to rest it. They didn't have a stick or any crutches for me to even borrow.

Mine went black from the toes completely up to the knee. I made a complaint against the hospital. It worked out that I should have been told to immediately put the foot in cold water then hot water, and keep repeating this. Take paracetamols. The blood wants to clot in your foot and leg, and when this happens it stops the circulation and the pain occures. Putting the foot in hot and cold water stops the blood clotting and stops your leg going black.

I did the same injury a year later and I was better prepared. The hospital this time had a paper slip explaining what the person should do plus they had some crutches this time.

Had lesser degrees of both - so I'm opting for a) I was very young and no longer remember the pain. However b) if it is massacred ankle, is still very clear in my mind *throwing lunch up*

The dislocated knee will result in a painful road to recovery but without knowing what the second ailment is.....I'd sooner opt for neither!
It doesn't look like a busted ankle to me. Having suffered a displacement of the ankle joint (dislocation) as a result of breaking (fracturing) both the tibia and fibula, I had massive swelling which took a few months to fully return to normal, and only minor bruising.

Having heard what Ben went through afterward in the hospital in Kathmandu, I'd rather take option A, where I don't know what happened, or if it's in a first world hospital or not.

Photo B happened about 3 and a bit weeks ago on the Thuli Bheri. Something, we dont know what, bit or stung Bens foot. He woke up one morning with a huge swolen ankle. He paddled that day and the next morning he decided to get a donkey to walk him out. The day after we left him we saw his porter on the river bank with a huge sign out telling us to stop. By this point his foot was huge, black and oozing with pus. It was here where we thought it would be best if he got choppered out. So from here he went to KTM for about 4 days only to find out that they couldnt treat it, then he got flown to Deli where, to my knowledge he still is. Though I think its getting better slowly from what iv heard.

Appears to be a good bit of medical/first aid knowledge amongst the UKRGBers.

A bit more to the scenario may change your minds:

a) Dislocated knee (torn anterior cruciate, posterior cruciate, lateral collateral, damaged medial meniscus).
Damage done on river in Scotland.
Air rescue easily accessible.
Image

b) Mystery bite by mystery reptile/insect!
On middle of Thuli Beri in remote Nepal.
The 'Hugh Thomas' rapid 'Donkey Evac' initiated, but infection spreading rapidly.
Air Evacuation requested.
Currently being treated for cellulitis in probably the nicest place in Delhi - the hospital (Flat screen TV, Ensuite, Air Con etc)
Image

Personally, I think its a not-so-fun game of 2 halves.
Initially, you'd take a) everytime! Especially with feeling maintained in my foot throughout indicating no significant nerve or vascular damage.
Pysio will be long and hard though.
But to have your foot balloon and blister like Bens did! Jayz! The unknown would make that a scary ailment to have!
Apparently he continued paddling for a day before it started to blister, then the 'Hugh Thomas Donkey Evac' happened and with his leg dangling for a long period of time things got worse. So air assistance was called. Then the necrosis happened! Scary beans!
Now the right antibiotics have been located and the dead skin peeled away, a skin graft is required. Long term recovery should be 100% and relatively straight forward.

But to have your foot balloon and blister like Bens did!
When i had peritonitis while in hospital for crohns last September (exploded stomach ulcer), after surgery i had insane water retention. Despite having my stomach explode the worst part was having huge heavy feet afterwards, it makes the road to recovery so much worse if you can't simply get up and walk to the door for a breath of fresh air.

I hope your'e both well soon.
