Usernames amnesty

Post by cswalker » Tue Nov 22, 2011 2:33 am

More out of curiosity and hopefully some amusement, I thought it would be fun to find out why we hide behind a random username rather than our own names for those that do. Is it to be cool, to be elusive, to not reveal one's identity, to be able to post what you think without worrying that others may cast a shadow on you for that opinion, is it for humor, is it because it's your nickname, who knows, but we'd love to find out.

Tell all.....

Except those like Mark R, Adrian Cooper etc etc who have fairly self explanatory usernames of course, unless you can shed light on some others....

Is mine self explanatory? Or is this going to turn into another unicycling thread?

I show my full name in my signature; I just use this username because it was what AOL gave me when I was 8, and it's stuck since! It always seems to be available so it's become the norm for me.

Okay so I use my 'real name' here.
On calpaddle, my local forum, I go by "Dino" as it's what the late Colin Unwin used to refer to me as ie. "Dino - dinosaur... long neck and no brain.
Now I'm turning into a grumpy old man, it's doubly fitting.

I used to post under a different user name (which is one of the nicknames that I use in face to face as well), but after someone had a gripe about using pseudonyms on here a while ago I changed to Strad - shortening of my real name and used by many of my paddling and climbing friends over the years.

most would be more likely to put "my little pony" rather "Donkey" :-)

I got the nick-name 'Scout' at university for something to do with a knot... and I was a member of the Scumbags, University of Portsmouth Canoe Club.

I don't want to splash my real name across web sites in case it gets harvested for spam or junk mail - that's all.

But I ought to change my username in 2013, because I'll be moving away from Oxford.

The great thing about the anonymity of the internet is that you can use a seemingly real name to disguise who you really are. I'll let you into a secret - I'm really George Clooney, but don't tell anyone.

My paddling kit used to be orange (orange boat, orange paddles, orange cag, orange BA...) and the name quickly followed.

Ought to change it really as I haven't paddled in all orange kit for over 6 years!

It's the same username I use for most things, including my first ever email account; I've had the username for over half my lifetime now, so It doesn't occur to me to be anything else... My real name is in my sig panel though.

I hide my real name, by using my real name. It's a double bluff kind of thing! I'm not 100% convinced it's worked though!

As I've said before, mine comes from a fish I owned when I first registered on here, a Mbu Pufferfish called Henry which grew big (about 24" long). It is my superman name compare to my Clark Kent name of Alan Lilley! (My present avatar pic is of my last big fish which was a Giraffe Catfish, which was 32" long, and acted like a puppy at times! I thought that since effectively no-one would know who I am anyway, it didn't really matter what they called me!

My real name is Ray and the W5 comes from my private plate! Whoooooooo!
And yes the plate is W5 RAY and for those that are into cars it's on an original one of a kind special Scooby built in 2000 by the Japanese Rally Squad and can travel rather quickly when not stored in the garage where it now spends most of it's time as it doesn't have a roof rack for taking boats!

Ray Cooper

No more hiding for me then! That's my surname as well now out in the open!

My name is actually John Woodhall, but I originally liked the idea of anonymity hence John Smith.

Ruined it now haven't I?
