2.10 that drop is much steeper than it looks from that angle, just bounced up after getting sideways... his deck popped but he was fine :)

Do you meant the one at 5.32? I think Callum put down the camera to pick up a throw line! I did a load of spectacular ends and then flushed into the small eddy on river left.

If that was you dropping into that hole and instantly back looping, good effort. Staying in your boat and riding it out, nice one. Shame no video though, looked like it would dish out a high scoring run.

Great video Callum! Jamie's little beating was good. Never seen such a fast set of underwater cartwheels. The main Foyers drop must definitely go at the right level. Anyone ever done it?

Talking of local UK vids and Scotland, anyone seen Sneaky Freaky Creeky yet? There was a thread in the adverts section on here but it didn't seem to get much interest. I was excited to get back from my best ever weekend of Scottish boating on Monday to find it sat on the doormat. Not quite what I expected but really good. Not as much scary enormous stuff as I had hoped but loads of good footage and good paddling on the classics and some less well known stuff. Best bit is there's a version with all the river and rapid names on. Just doubled the length of my to do list.

I have to say looking at Foyers several times, I don't know of any other BIG falls I've seen on video (and this is right there amongst them, about 36m) that has such a kicker halfway down. The ones I can recall are just straight drops. The kicker at Foyers has the potential to right royally stuff you up... and you've still got another 25m to drop!! Those looking to get in the 'big league' in Scotland should go check out the Kilfinnan Fall on the way to the Garry. It's about 30m, and the plungepool is about 5m, in the middle! I know 'cos I've snorkelled it! :-)

By living near there, going when the level is high, throwing a boat off several times as the level lowers to did the sweet spot...it goes.

But as you boys have seen over the last 4 years, I'm utterly crap these days, so I don't see why it would be me trying it :)

Fairly simplifiable physics I would think:

You need the mass of the boat and paddler, the volume of the boat and paddler and the height of the fall.

Assuming the drop is freefall, the boat accelerates under gravity over the height of the fall (I do not think terminal velocity is going to be an issue and lets ignore air friction anyway - one of our simplifications) to reach it's entry speed into the water.

Assuming no water friction (another big simplification) and since buoyancy also uses acceleration of g, your initial retarding force (assume boat immerses all at once, so already a 2m+ discrepancy) will be equal to (total volume of boat and paddler) * g - (mass of boat and paddler )*g. Divide this force by the total mass of boat and paddler to find the deceleration. Then calculate the displacement to decelerate from entry speed to zero and you have a depth to stop the boat. If you add the length of the boat to that you will have a conservative estimate of deep the boat should go on landing (it will be a bit shallower because the buoyancy force will grow during the first boat length and we have assumed it is zero, plus there will be some air and water friction retarding it the whole way down - but hell, you want to have some margin of error over breaking your ankles!

If you are going in non-vertical, than you need to to factor in some ballistics (quadratic function), hydrodynamic lift may affect the result slightly in that case too, but keep it simple and have that extra inch of clearance!

Very nice, brought back memories of last week when I was up visiting relatives and walking on south side of Loch Ness.
On the Farigaig, did you run the slot just after the bridge at Torness, it looked very meaty, towback to opposite bank.
One morning looking out the window we could see the upper Abercalder running full on, would have been an interesting paddle I think.
We also saw an interesting little creek near Knockie, one very large drop, looked possible, but unfortunately the final rapid into Loch Ness is blocked.
On Wednesday the Falls of Foyers "almost" looked doable, lower level than the pics here, but showed a possible route on the left, away from the kicker. Different to the last time I saw it, when it was a very large icicle!
