Post by nedsdustbin » Fri Sep 23, 2011 8:01 am

Having just got an iPhone I'm looking for any good paddling related apps.

Any suggestions?

Be careful if using the apps outside the UK as shown on Watchdog last evening. Normally using you apps is free in you package when in the Uk but not when abroad. The roaming can automaticly use your app and when you return home you can have a bill for £200 - 300. People on the program were getting £700 bills.

I noticed this some 2 years ago so now I either swap my sim card to a non-internet mobile when going abroad or if I leave it in the internet mobile and I only turn it on when I need to use it when abroad.

Data roaming can be switched off - Settings - General - Network - Data roaming.

Met Office App quite a good one

If you get the TomTom satnav app (or, in fact, any navigation app I guess) then you can add Point Of Interest (POI) files from this thread: http://www.ukriversguidebook.co.uk/foru ... 08&start=0

I've got the Playak ones in my TomTom and they're pretty good.

On my pigging Nokia phone it keeps asking 'do I want to switch it on, yes or no' and it always happens when i'm doing something else so i'm pressing the keys for something else and it accepts the press for a yes and throws the roaming on, and never asks me ever again. This has happened so many times even when i'm trying to be careful.

So yes I turn the roaming off but it some how switches back on. I far prefer the 'I' phone, but the misses lost it out of her top pocket into the toilet so now it's buggered.

*Edit: it comes with 1:250k GB road map (OS) but its pretty good tbh, I'm not sure how much they are but you can then purchase more maps from the in app map shop, you can buy 1:25,000 1:50,000 and loads more, i've not used it yet but in the vew minutes i've just spent using it i've been impressed.
