Are we Good , Bad or just Ugly? Help Please!

Post by Gary Elson » Wed Jun 29, 2005 9:23 am

Hello Everyone

I am a Kayaker / Canoeist from the Midlands but also a student with the Open University doing a degree in Environmental Studies.

For my project this year I am looking the environmental impact of paddling in North Wales with respect to access, conflicts with Fisherman etc.
I would be really grateful if you guys and girls could spare me abit of your time to answer a couple of Questions.

1. How often do you paddle in North Wales ?

2. Which Rivers / areas do you use?

3. What is the normal duration of your stay?

4. How Many people are in your group?

5. How Much would you spend whilst there?

6. What sort of accommodation do you use?

The answers will be treated anonymously - collated and included in a confidential report - but I may post a summary on here if it becomes interesting.

if you have any stories of conflict i:e Mark and the ACA I would also be glad to here them. or if you know of any links to relevant Info that would also be good

Thanks in anticipation

Gary Elson (Coach Level 2)

"£150"

This is, as an average, true; I do spend about £150 just on myself on a weekend in wales. B&B's, meals out at "Y Stablau", visits to Cotswolds and Eddylines, tea shops, bakeries, pubs, and diesel stops all mount up.

1. Up 20 times a year, if you include day trips to Tryweryn/Eddylines

2. Tryweryn, Llangollen, Capel Curig, Betws-y area

3. Afternoon -> weekend

4. 2 - 20. If just nipping over for a quick paddle from my parents normally just 2 of us, if going for a weekend could be a big club trip.

5. £5 - £100ish depending on duration. For a weekend £100ish would do Ali and myself.

6. My parents in Shrewsbury! Tents or bunkhouse if staying locally.

Had abuse on the Dwyfor once, we walked downstream and launched from a public footpath then hightailed it out of there. Not really had any problems elsewhere, but then not gone looking for it on any runs with problems.
