Where are they now?

Post by banzer »

This is a bit of a nerdy topic so if it's not your thing (you know who you are!) you don't have to play, go and read a surfing magazine or something :-)

I was reading through a load of old Kayak Sessions and guidebooks while unpacking boxes and was wondering what some of the 'names' of kayaking from the 90s and early '00s are up to now. Why? Dunno, curiosity, wondering if they are still charging hard as they get a bit older and whether I should try to charge hard or mellow out on 3/4.

Alex Podolak: ran a whole load of hard stuff in New Zealand a few years back; all over the NZ guidebook
Alex Nicks, Nico Chassing, Dale Jardine: old hands from the Zambezi; still there??
Rusty Sage: cool name!
the Kern Brothers: did a lot of expeditions
Tao Berman: gone a bit quiet, but all over the early 00s
Shaun Baker: ditto, but all over the 90s... an occasional Hurley appearance
Flemming Schmitt: still going large in Norway?
Mike Abbott and Alan Eddart: do they still do expeds in faraway places or is it mainly Norway now?
Dave Biggin: I hear he's a hit on the wind surfing circuit these days ;-)

Also, are there any of the 'big names' that don't really do playboating, about from Eoghainn? This would make me feel better, because I am rubbish at it.

That's enough, any contributions / gossip welcome, ta.

A mate of mine is a mate of Rusty sage. He is tearing it up in kayak surf comps mostly I think. Wins a lot of them too.
Not sure if he has stayed away from freestyle on purpose or not.

Not spoe to Alan for a few months, but he is still rocking out in Norway with Mikey. Both over in the Uk a year ago and both running drops they never have in Norway...so mustn't be chilling on the easy stretches! Alan's still updating his site, Riverkore.com (or something like that) I'm sure someone much closer will know more.

So did Mikey.

Dale is flying helicopters in SA. Nico has just moved back to France a couple of months ago - but was still paddling harder than anyone out on the Zam until then...

Justin Bunn? - who I last saw on The Zam in 1994 and was up till then the best boater I'd ever seen.
The Masters Brothers? (I'm assuming these two hit puberty, discovered girls and beer and gave up boating)
