Suggestions for Welsh Touring River in Canadian

Post by plook »

This time last year, i did a canoe trip over four days on the Wye of about 40 miles (including Symonds Yat) and i want to go back to Wales to do a similar sort of length, but hopefully on a different river. Can anyone suggest a route and perhaps a starting place with canoe hire. I would prefer the grade to be around 1 - 2.

Thanks

Tom

If not, i may go back and do Glasbury to Holme Lacy on The Wye.

Can anyone recommend a cheap place to rent a canoe from, or even loan me one. I used my own last year but it's not available this time due to someone taking it to Scotland

Thanks for those suggestions. I will look into them. I should not rule out England but i was hoping to be able to find camping sites or even wild camping en route, so would the two suggestions above still be ok?

I'm just not very familiar with Wales, if you were asking about 3-4 days in Scotland I'm sure we could make a reasonable list.

Also try on the Song of the Paddle forum, it is more focussed towards canoeing and there are loads of trip reports to look at for inspiration.

Scotland is not out of the question and the only reason why i have not included it is because of midges. My canoeing partner was there last week cycling from Newcastle to Edinburgh and said the midges were very bad.

How about the River Teifi in western Wales.
Nice touring river with some stretches of easy white water and a couple of much harder rapids which are easily portagable. Paddleable from above Llandysul to the sea at Cardigan.
Look at Llandysul Paddlers website for more information about access etc.

Teifi: Paddleable from above Llandysul to the sea at Cardigan:

Is that a continuous section or would it involve support for shuttling?

As for the midges between Newc-Edin - maybe they were just a few flies, i'll ask him.

Severn from Newtown, to Welshpool to Montford Bridge to Shrewsbury. Done by loads of people and you get to camp at the Royal Oak pub

Thanks Dave.

I've got the canoe for the trip and we are going to do Glasbury to Horworthy on the Wye this time, but will look into the other routes for spring next year.

Thanks for all the help.
