Tom, this is a picture of a genius nature. These guys taught me how to boat about 20+ years ago... and Fred I followed doing my first grade 5 aged about 15. So names I can offer:
Patch Bennett
Fred Wondre
Neil Anstice
Pete Vickers
Justin Snell??
Chris Sladden??
Rob Saunders??

Well thats it from me but I now need to find out who they all are so will have to email one of them who I still see most weeks. Great picture, which I pressume is from Chris's back in the day collection??

The sitting guy with a beard is I think Neil Anstice - I first met him some weeks back at the funeral of the guy sitting behind him.

Well spotted Mr R, I had missed the guy behind the one who deffinetely is Neil Anstice ;-) I have emailed Neil to see if he remembers the photos & who is in it, so will have to see what he comes up with.

Tom, did the photo owner give you the list of who is in the picture??

Wow, I only recognised Chris Sladden although Fred also looked familiar but I just couldn't work out why. I've only spent the last week looking at photos of the 2 of them!

Yes, as you say it is me in the picture, this takes me way back. If I remember correctly, it was taken while we were staying in a cottage in North Wales around Pwllheli area? It was taken in the early/mid 80's over a Christmas period and started off with just Fred, Chris Wheeler and myself for the first 3-4 days to be joined later by the others from Riverside. It was during our first paddling day when there was just Fred, Chris W and myself that we first met up with Chris Sladden. We were sat in a hire van at the put-in to the Ogwen trying to figure out the logistics of getting the vehicle to the take-out point when a solo paddler (Chris S) turned up. Obviously we did the shuttle together and he joined us for the paddle and also for other rivers that week.

The actual picture order is, from the left:
Patch Bennett (in the white shirt)
Pete Vickers (looking from behind the beer cans)
Fred Wondre
Chris Sladden
Chris Wheeler
Neil Anstice
Rob Saunders?
Justin Snell

Thanks for bringing back the memories of that trip :)

Ha! Happy days- wild days- fresh faced days - bit like Tom now (my little joke- remember L and N?). I'm pretty sure this was in a cottage up the Crafnant valley- parts of which we bimbled down. The guy with the red mug- from Cardiff, ?? Adrian Lockstone?? I seem to remember that we all watched the film "Gremlins"- which got funnier with the building of the tower of cans!

Funnily enough I only discovered this valley last week, walking there with Heather - very nice hidden spot. The river looked like just my sort of thing, an overgrown rock ditch.

Which is pretty much what it is. During the floods it actually looked rather good. The rest of the time it just looks a bit rubbish.

Interesting historical photo. Particularly like The Leaning Tower of Beera. Wales answer to Italian culture?
As far as date is concerned I would (almost) put money on it being second half of the 80s. Definitely post 1986. My best geuss would be Christmas 1987, that would make Chris 22?
I wasn`t with them at the cottage but I remember the era. At that time I was still hitting the well worn trail of the Usk Wye Dee etc before I discovered there were actually other rivers that you could paddle!!

Ah yes that takes me back.. I think the guy in the very front lying down was a friend of Adrian's although does resemble Mr Snell but is not

I seem to recall a very fine new years eve bash in Bangor that same trip and I am guessing but would say it was late 80's probably 1988

I think the same trip Fred's boat did the hard river right line on Swallow and I recall getting a series of pictures of Chris Sladden pinned in his Taifun half way down... Must have those somewhere....

Pretty sure the 2 other guys were a couple of welsh students, 'Stu' might have been one ? There were in a Mini IIRC. I recall them trying to convince the barman in the 'local' pub to let them sleep on the bar floor since they were to drunk to drive home....

Ah good to see this historical photo still around and particularly fitting as it`s just over 7 years since we lost Chris Wheeler and he`s in so many of our thoughts for enriching our lives. His memory lives on.
