Still a few days to get your responses in.

Good to see the weight of argument put forward by Rev'd Caffyn in his response.

You've got until the end of the week to respond! There still seems to be very few letters from canoe clubs on the list.

If anyone wants some motivation to add more kayakers views, read the Wye and Usk Foundation Response.
Done any NE/NW rivers not on the site? PM me!

There seem to be submissions from every angling organisation under the sun. Nothing from the WCA or BCUetc. I can see four canoe clubs, of which only one is Welsh. Great.

The BUCC submission is ready; we're just seeing if we can get it tranlated into welsh (all documents we send are required to be bilingual; if it won't be done in time it'll have to be submitted in english only.)

Edit: The tranlsator has asked us to tack a message on the front saying that a welsh language version will be available october 1st and send it. Yay!!!

An extract from my response ...

The state of Access to for canoeists to navigate our wonderful natural river heritage in Wales is utterly deplorable and can no longer be ignored. Due to the entrenched and selfish angling interests involved, Access ‘Agreements’ have completely failed to deliver anything approaching fair, reasonable and equitable access to the rivers for canoe navigation, over the past three decades and beyond.

The only reasonable solution is what already exists successfully in Scotland, courtesy of the Land Reform Act; a legally enshrined right of responsible access allowing all parties to access and navigate the river environment responsibly and harmoniously. It is the only viable solution in 21st Century Wales.

I look forward to sharing our river heritage responsibly and harmoniously with all stakeholders concerned.

I would be grateful if you could submit any written evidence by Friday 18 September 2009 to Virginia Hawkins, Clerk to the Committee, at:

Sustainability.comm@Wales.gsi.gov.uk

Here's a positive target for Friday - let's see if we can get 100 extra folk to email the above address by the end of Friday - summarise your feelings on the state of Access in Wales, especially regarding the effectiveness of 'Agreements' and the need for a legally enshrined right of responsible access.

Post here when you've done it.

Did mine the other week, but there don't seem to be many from kayakers compared to fishing interests......

(i'll stick to 1 though, 2 submissions would seem greedy, mind you, FG's second posting, could almost see the flecks of rage driven spittle on the screen as he typed!)

Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't it the angling fraternity that hunted Tarka almost to extinction? Just like they'd presently like to do to cormorants?

"There is also the view that anglers and conservationists are net contributors both financially..........while canoeists are net takers and never contribute to river management"

...........other than through the massive subsidy angling receives from OUR taxes. It's about time we ended that subsidy and made anglers pay the full cost of their pastime until and unless they accept they have to share our natural heritage.

By the way, just what do they mean by "loud male bonding noises"? :-0

I agree. But there is only one written submission from a Welsh canoe club. A cunning plan maybe, but I don't get it.

Have I missed something or have both the BCU and CW failed to submit a comment. I would have thought that CE and the SCA would want to submit a response, given that many of their members paddle regularly in Wales. Perhaps they submitted their comments in the last few days? (I notice that mine hasn't been added to the website yet either.)

I emailed the BCU and WCA about this last week. I got a response from the WCA stating that they were gathering evidence and are contributing to the evidence in a manner appropriate for an NGB. I had no response from the BCU. Despite the sterling effort by WCA so far, I personally think we have missed a trick with no clubs contributing. A strong and compelling case could have been put forward with local support from across Wales and the rest of the UK.

Anyone notice that FG gave himself a promotion?!

In the first letter he referred to himself as a "voluntary river keeper" whereas later he referred to himself as "river keeper".

Also, he has mentioned a great deal about what his club does and does not do on this site but from that email it would appear that he is a regular member and not at committee level as i had presumed from reading some of his posts.

And yes 3 cheers to all of those who have worked so hard to maintain and escalate this national requirement.

Anyone know how long they will be deliberating this?

I've been looking through the responses there's some real horsesh#t on there from certain corners.
The Ogmore Angler's letter (last one on the list) is like a fairytale about the big bad canoeists.

Apparently canoeists: have no reguard for the river, cut barbed wire, trample over spawning beds, leave litter,do not help clean the river up and eat children's souls.

I may have made one of these up. I figure if they can make it up so can I..
