Why Do Non Paddlers Say...

"Where do you do that" when you tell them that you are a WW kayaker?

Where do they think you would do it? On the moon or something ;-)

I thought the most common response was "don't you get wet?"

"Ooooh, that looks dangerous."

Not half as dangerous as you walking around with your 5 year old kids on wet rocks wearing jeans and trainers!

I live in Birmingham, mostly I hear variations of 'do you do that on the canals?'

I made the mistake of taking a young lady i was trying to impress on a kayaking trip once - she said "wow it's not a sexy sport like surfing is it".

I nearly cried.

Some people are just unbelieveably unobservant. As a beginner, I was asked this question by two policemen when carrying my boat from a layby to the canal. I was on the canal bridge at the time ...

My most common response is "What? Your mad!" just before they start shifting away from me.

Didnt you just love the days of valetta,s and dancers mixed in with people wearing big chunky trainners

The variation I have had pretty often on this one when you get into conversation about paddling is, 'yeah we did that one day at school and we did that rolling thing you mentioned and everything and it was dead easy'......then argue with you for half an hour when you try to explain that tipping the boat upside down and getting out of it is a capsize and not the same as a roll, ' No, No it was definitely rolling we were doing, definitely'. I gave up trying to to explain ages ago and just smile and nod now.

The other one is the age old pointing at the sky 'you're not going out in this are you?' when it's raining. and 'isn't the water cold?' This is England therefore.........

Reminded me of the Teeside YouthFreeStyle last year, I was judging on the top feature and after watching for a good 10 minutes, a lovely old dear asked 'is the competition to see how far they can paddle up before you blow the whistle?'

Maybe this is why we're not ready for Olympic status yet!
