Kayaking is Not a Crime photo competition

Post by Jules »

To celebrate the WCA aligning the CT charging policy with their own access policy I thought I'd run a competition. I've got a Kayaking is Not a Crime t-shirt* and stickers to give away (and probably one or two other paddling goodies I have lying about too). To enter, simply post your best photo of a 'No Canoeing' type sign.

The competition will be judged by my Mum on the evening of the 28th July, so make sure you have pictures posted (or emailed to me) by then. The KINAC team may seek permission to use some of the photos in a future campaign.

Still the best one out there that I've seen (I didn't take it and I can't remember who actually did!):

I can't see the photo on this comp, but I think that it's mine.

Another favourite of mine (Spean Gorge takeout) is this one:

Yeah, it seems to have disappeared from the ICCC site as well now - hopefully just temp. Maybe Andy's been ****ing about with the site again?!

It probably was yours - about 90% of the photos on there are either yours or Harry's.

I think it must have, it certainly wasn't there last month when I stopped off with my bro and Chris G.

Tee hee, this competition must be open to the abuse of people making
their own (temporary, one hopes) NO CANOEING signs, and deploying
them at (in)appropriate places. Indeed, I must see if I can arrange to
do that myself this weekend ... Presumbly for campaigning purposes
there is no requirement to document that a sign is genuinely posted
by someone claiming a right to do so ?

That one is genuine. It apparently forbids people from canoeing in a tree
some way above the River Swale. That's not a problem, as we try quite
hard to avoid trees, and this one is well out of the way of paddlers...

So what is the Welsh word for canoeing/kayaking?

geufadwyr?
cymdeithas?
canwio?

That last one's just lazy, like bws and bysiau, use your own words...you wouldn't find the English language borrowing like that.

This just feeds into my English prejudice that the Welsh language is completely made up on the spur of the moment by supposed Welsh speakers ;-)

We don't need to make them, there are plenty out there for the taking.

I think the signs probably say different things depending on which language you speak eg "No Canoeing" (English) and "Free toast and tea cakes available to all welsh speakers at the small white farmhouse three miles along the road up the valley, on the left just past the second crop circle, opposite the old man on the bike" (Welsh)

That's what I suspected ;-) . Unfortunately my Welsh only extends as far as road signs and markings. "Araf! Dim parcio, trowch i'r chwith...diwedd", sheer poetry...but it wouldn't get me toast and cakes.

For interest, as you asked…

Ceufad = Kayak, hence the name of the WCA magazine.

Ceufadu = Kayaking

Canŵ = Canoe

Canŵio = Canoeing.
