Werner splits - grease for easier splitting?

My Werner splits which I keep for emergencies don't get used very often, but when I do use them they're a nightmare to take apart. The other day I really thought I wasn't going to be able to dismount them.

Has anyone else had this problem? A friend suggested greasing them with something - would that be a good idea? They usually live in my boat though so I'd imagine grease would either rub off or pick up so much grit it would just make it worse.

Anyone got any ideas?

Not familiar with Werner’s as I paddle with Celtic paddles but could you very lightly sand the inside of the female shaft half? Eg wrap fine grade wet and dry around a dowel and use it to smooth off or remove a tiny bit of material.

Use bicycle carbon seat post paste. Get it on-line or from any bike shop. Not expensive.

I'd try graphite ...i.e take a regular pencil and scribble all over that joint (That's probably exactly what is in the product in Stowels suggestion)

I've used the bike paste on a carbon paddle shaft for the opposite reason - to stop it creaking with every stroke. It was a very slightly loose fit, after being sanded down because somebody thought it was too tight... It's intended to increase grip, not as a lubricant, and contains fine grit. Pencil graphite sounds worth a try to me.

They should be rinsed & dried after every outing. Top of Werner's FAQs:
