Just for fun........

Post by banzer » Fri Dec 21, 2018 9:10 am

OK so you get kidnapped, blindfolded, put in a teleporter straight to a river, where you put on your gear and sit in your boat ready to go. your blindfold is removed, and you're just above Spirit Falls on the Little White Salmon. You are not allowed to get out and inspect and there is no-one on the bank to tell you the line. You are told that Evan Garcia, Rush Sturges and co are all down below on safety. You have (probably) seen the line countless times on video.

How much ££££ do you need to paddle straight off? What's your plan? You can do a couple of ferry glides to warm up but that's it.

NB. OFFER NOT AVAILABLE TO THOSE THAT HAVE PADDLED IT BEFORE!

I reckon I'd do it for £100 and hope I'm not due back at work next day.........

I recall a friend broke an ankle here so maybe a bit more money than that for the off-work.

Right hand fall, centre slightly left, ideally with plenty of speed up and a good boof stroke for a soft landing. £100 should do the trick like Banzer but more would be better.

I think I'd probably need £100k, and even then not sure if I'd do it.

Okay let's analize the risk.
Water will be reasonable temp (most year round).
At 30 ft into aerated water, risk of injury from flat landing minimal.
Deep pool with no big rocks to avoid.
The only (and very) significant danger is the drop just below with the super holdy hole.
But safety set up and ready.
So assuming your roll is pretty good, the actual risk of injury or worse is slim.
The real issue is that it could be very unpleasant.
It could also be a defining moment in your life.

Risk verses reward.

On Spirit Falls? This drop has a large punch bowl pool.

Doesn't one of the holes also extend into a cave? Or am I thinking of another drop I never intend to run?

Historically the drop immediately below, the right side particularly had resulted in some very ugly incidents (like blue, not breathing). The boil of the main drop it's self also has been known to brutalize people against the right wall. And then there is the joy of finding yourself behind the main drop sans bits of gear. It's actually a very committing proposition that perhaps doesn't come across in all the recent media.

Personally I don’t care for throwing myself over waterfalls especially not in a 17ft sea kayak., but each to their own. I’d paddle off upstream, take out my kidnapper with a couple of rocket flares, get out somewhere, radio the police on my vhf, have my kidnapper arrested and go sea kayaking with some friends, and live to tell the tale.

The talk of getting stuck behind the falls made me think about this article from a few years back.

this one?

Pay my flights and the rest of the holiday and I'm in for free. Plus if you can cover my unpaid leave and the baby-sitting I'll be double-made up.

Note 1: part of my assessment of committing to Nevis Bluff before even getting in country was based on existing footage. (now in hindsight, I know that was super stupid, but then I have a history of doing stupid things*)

Note 2: I'm an arrogant tw@t

Note 3: My prescription is -2.5 in left and right eyes - I learnt to paddle whitewater without glasses or contact lenses - I quote: "Wow, look at that! Did you know there's a ruined castle on that hill up there?" (River Dee, Llangollen)

*Stupid things does not equate to taking unacceptable risks. I believe I was, and still am a very safe decision maker.

Re: Note 3 - I have always paddled with glasses, I know where the castle is having stayed near it earlier this year, but I can't say I have ever spotted it from the river, even since I've known it is there... (although that is only 1 run).

As regards your decision making, I agree you always seemed to be safe on the river, perhaps less safe in the pub though?
