White water kayak that's also good for sea surfing

Post by Mini2 » Sun Oct 14, 2018 7:58 am

Hi I got a Dagger Outlaw I've had for a few years , since getting a pyrahna burn I mainly use the outlaw for sea surfing I find it quiet good well better than the burn for surfing I'm no expert though just for fun,
I hear that a few of the old school play boats are good in the surf,
Any one found any other whitewater kayak that they found quiet good in the surf

I enjoy surfing in my Pyranha Loki. It has sufficient length and sharp enough rails to track along a shoulder, but will also do the 'blast' type move to run directly forwards ahead of a breaker.

Necky Jive is genuinely better than some plastic surf kayaks!

My Prozone was great in the surf, it's super sharp rails helped but also meant it was a bit of a handful on white water. My I3 also makes a good surf kayak and it's a great ww kayak, though most paddlers found it a bit to lively.

What you are looking for is a boat with a flat hull and sharp rails and enough length to be able to pick up the waves. Old school play boats were great when they were still well over 2m long but modern playboats are really too short for more than pulling tricks in the soup. The Loki certainly fits the bill but depending upon what kind of white water you want to use it on you might want something with a bit more volume. The Dagger Axiom certainly works on white water and surf and makes a great compromise, and I would guess that the Pyranha Ripper would be worth trying too, although it leans more towards a ww boat than the Axiom.
it's not a playboat, it's a river runner

Thanks for all your comments on this subjects
Some people like me when first starting out not sure which direction to go its good to get a kayak that can be used on rivers and a bit of sea surf so its good to know what's available out their that can be used for both especially when your on a budget. Hopefully this will help others who not sure what to get thanks
