Posting Photos
Probably the most requested feature on UKRGB in recent years has been a photo upload facility. Over the years a combination of historical, technical and financial reasons have prevented this feature being implemented, there has also been a fair bit of procrastination on my part. The financial issue still exists as every photo will cost a few fractions of a penny to host every month and there will be the bandwidth cost to deliver them to your web browser.
How do I post Photos to UKRGB
A new tab has been added to the bottom of the full editor, select the tab and drag your photo(s) in to the box or brows to your photos. Once the photo is uploaded the BBCode is automatically added to the editor. Do not edit the text between the [img] tags as this is the important bit. Photo work best if you keep the BBCode on a separate line to other text. Use the preview button to check your post and then submit it, simple!
Photos are automatically resized to a maximum of 800 x 600px before uploading to UKRGB.
How is the photo posting paid for
The photo hosting is paid for in the same way as everything else on UKRGB, lets just say no one makes money from UKRGB.
What if you have a problem uploading photos
Ask for help here, but do tell me what version of which web browser on which operating system you are using. If you are using Windows XP with Internet explorer please upgrade you PC before asking for help.
It is very likely there are bugs in the software so please report them.
Enjoy.

Hi Mark,
If financial is a reason to not do it you are likely using the wrong web host. Storage is very very cheap these days!

Re: Posting Photos
Thank you for your supportive and carefully thought out feedback.
One of the technical reason was being able to use the correct class of storage, the photos storage cost £0.02 per GB per month plus bandwidth charges. I will leave the job of estimating the annual bandwidth and storage charges for UKRGB as an exercise for the reader. The rambling of tens of thousands of kayakers over the best part of 20 years takes a fair bit of storage (and backup storage (and bandwidth)).
PS: A web host is an expensive way of hosting a site like UKRGB, but they don't require significant technical skill (I don't use a web host).

Perhaps you didn't read the whole post? He is doing it. But he's doing it in a carefully considered and technically sound way which has taken time to develop; just hosting people's 5MB images wouldn't have worked - even at £0.02 per GB per month plus bandwidth charges somebody still has to pay for it. Mark gives a lot of his time to this site, free of charge, and shouldn't have to subsidise the cost as well.If financial is a reason to not do it

Re: Posting Photos

Awesome work Mark! Rather like our recent outing on Loch Etive. So cold on Saturday night that the water bag froze, and our orange juice was slush in the morning!

Re: Posting Photos
At the end of the payment procedure there was a message "ERROR! ERROR!" but the payment has gone through correctly. I have a screen shot if required.

Re: Posting Photos
Awesome job dude, many thanks.
I will still host mine off site to save the pennies as I have never had an issue doing so but I really appreciate how useful many will find this.

Re: Posting Photos
As post above from Nick Crowhurst. I had "Error Error" message appeared after clicking "return to UKRGB" button on PayPal. Seems benign. My receipt turned up promptly enough.

Re: Posting Photos
Is anyone posting photos using "the latest Mac Book Pro"? I've had a report that it doesn't work. I am trying to get more precise details of the browser version etc.

Can't find the "donate" button you refer to. Happy to donate for my advert of a Kokatat drysuit.

Re: Posting Photos
Donations are very much optional for all non-commercial posts - the 'donate' button is at the top of the page for Courses Trips and Guiding as that the only place where donations are specifically requested for posts.
PS - just looked at your advert, ouch! You really don't need to donate to UKRGB as well, but it's up to you!
