Competition – Name this new rapid on the Greta

Post by Slime » Sun Oct 15, 2017 12:34 pm

Nearly two years ago Storm Desmond caused huge devastation in Cumbria and especially to Keswick and the river Greta. Occasionally bad things come out of good and it’s generally acknowledged by paddlers that the “New Greta” is vastly changed and now much more fun for the kayaker.

There is one outstanding new rapid on the river at GR292247: We think it really deserves a name – perhaps something indicating that it was a naughty progeny arising from Desmond’s wickedness?

Suggestions please by 24th October. The winner as selected by our 3 judges receives a free guide book or 2 maps of their choice from Rivers Publishing.

Happy paddling,
Peter Knowles, Rivers Publishing.

Desmond's deposit ?
Desmond's doings ?
Daughter of Desmond?

Cumbria is a long way from me, so without knowing the rapid it's difficult. A vid would really help.
Is is a small rapid? Des'tiny.
Does running it lead to chaos? Des'o'creation (a play on Desecration, but if I have to explain that it doesn't work.)

... a few years ago there was a landslide on the Toby Seven canyons run in BC that caused a footie pitch sized lake over the last part of one of the best rapids.
On the up side, it created a new ugly rapid at the outflow.

This was named "Unwanted Stepchild" by the first group down. Best name ever...

Taking my reasoning from that other mighty river the Zam can we call it Number 1 (because there is no number 2 on the run!)

"Stormy Waters"

or simply

"The Storm"

and a section above could be "The Lull before the Storm"

I thought all rapids have to be given horrific sounding names - if only to help with the bragging rights (or swim excuses) in the pub afterwards.

as it was caused by Storm Desmond...
How about 'Desperation'

Desaturation or Des'saturation
Desmond's Decendency ('cus you descend it)

I like Desiccant:
A substance used as a drying agent (Des-I-Can't, you dry out when you portage, geddit?)

Our distinguished team of judges - Tony, Rachel and me discussed the entries over a pint and a pizza last night.
There are some brilliant, clever and funny entries – some just too clever!
We narrowed our top 3 shortlist down to –
Desmond's deposit by Mike Veal
Des'tiny also by Mike Veal.
Desdemona .....the demon daughter of Desmond, By Pat R

We are asking Stuart Miller, author of “Canoe and Kayak Guide to N.W.England” to make the final choice and announce it here.
Thank you everyone for some brilliant entries.
Pete Knowles, Rivers Publishing.
