'Swimmers Ear' ! can you get this from swimming pools?

Post by scottdog007 » Thu Jun 01, 2017 9:46 am

I've been coaching a number of guys that have been paddling for one year, they are enthusiastic and want to perfect their rolling, so they have been doing a lot of rolling, mainly in a swimming pool but occasionally on a lake. One has developed 'swimmers ear'. Me as a coach and we as a club have not bee advising them over this. So my question is can you get swimmers ear so easily and quickly and from a swimming pool?

My understanding is "Swimmers ear" is a bacterial infection so in theory could be caught in one session as opposed to "surfers ear" or extosois which is a bony growth which develops over a longer period.

I have no medical training but unfortunately personal experience of extosis :-(

Ah 'swimmers ear' and 'surfers ear' I didn't realise they are 2 different things.

Just read up on it, swimmers ear is a bacterial infection, normally in one ear, so can be easily caught but also easily treated.

I bought some ear plugs for when I'm doing pool sessions - think they are doc's pro plugs...

They help with that after effect of having an inner ear full of water for a day or so after!

That's not a good sign, as ears should drain unless you have surfer's ear...
