Running the River Rothey

Post by jimip » Sun Dec 25, 2016 10:02 pm

Hi all.
Anyone know the current situation with running the Rothey from Rydal down on to Windermere?

We are a small group, max.6, having a couple of days paddling in the lakes over the new year weekend and looking to do something different than just being out on the lakes.

Thanks in advance

No restrictions on the Rothay.
If there is water it is fine. Only place to take care is around the short grade 3 rapid just above Pelter Bridge and not far after leaving Rydal Water. The land between the lake and the bridge is all private so there is no opportunity for landing, inspection, portage or rescue. Please respect this as the owners of the house on the left bank do not like paddlers walking around their garden.

if there is enough water then starting at the car park at the northern end of Grasmere Village gives a nice extension of the standard run with a nice start through the village. This give a mini 3 lakes and 3 rivers expedition :)

About 8 of us ran it down from Grasmere a couple of weeks ago with absolutely no issues unless you object to ramblers waving, taking photos and cheering when you manage not to fall in.

If you're looking for a gentle intoroduction to river paddling rather than lake paddling then the Derwent might be worth a look. I did a trip from the south shore of Derwent Water, down the Derwent (river) up to the north shore of Bassenthwaite earlier this year and it was very pretty. NB you need a permit to paddle on Bassenthwaite but they're easy to pick up from the Tourist Information in Keswick.

Thanks for the replies.
The comments on the guide page seemed a bit out of date hence the question.
Again, thanks and happy paddling.
