What is the best psychological advice you could ever give?

Post by archiebald » Tue Apr 12, 2016 3:56 pm

So I was talking with a buddy about paddling and Zone experiences - you know, where everything is just sweet and perfect, the mind and body and challenge of the river are all in harmony - and the opposite of that, when everything is horrible no matter what you try and do.

I’m sure kayakers have more than their fair share of both times, but one of the reasons I paddle is for that sweet harmonious challenged feeling I have during, and the sweet harmonious content feeling I get after.

And I just saw the thread on the best paddling advice you’ve ever been given, and it made me think:

What is the best psychological advice you could ever give?

Like…

- How do you personally get into the Zone? (or get to a place where it can come get you?)

- How do you deal with fear and uncertainty?

- What do you do when something goes wrong? How do you keep your head level? How do you pull it back?

Personally it’s something about being present on the river - not letting the fear or what just happened have too much of an impact. Keeping a clear mind. Not thinking too much, being able to shrug things off and get on with the thing that’s in front of me.

I should declare my interest - I practice meditation and so I see the theory and practice from that point of view, but wondering what others do.

Don't do it if you are not having fun.
Why else would it be worth the hassle/discomfort/risk etc?

When inspecting a rapid near the top of your grade, once you have decided that you are going to run it think only of the line you want to make and don't spend any time thinking about the places you don't want to go or the consequences if things go wrong - leave that to your safety team.
it's not a playboat, it's a river runner

And when you've focussed your mind on what Dave says above, smile. It creates a positive cycle.

Slow day in the office today ......

Actions speak louder than words - so act serenely yourself and it will influence others around you.

I remember my first time down the Lower Tryweryn - with a paddling Zen master - and I've always tried to follow his example.
Canoeing - bigger boat, broken paddle, more skill!

Make your paddling look beautiful, smooth, and effortless. And then it usually will be.

Concentrate on the current water. (tough to do for me.) but when it works. It's as sweet as ripe peach on a summer's day.

Observe, plan, visualise and execute. The key here is visualisation but from my work in other sports I recognise that for some people this works and for others it is very difficult. The quality of observation and planning is dependent upon experience.
All the usual scratches...

I should expand... so how to ensure you are having fun.

Concentrate on right now. Don't worry about the nasty rapid coming up or that last rapid you messed your line on. Or the last time you swam. Focus on where you are now on the river and enjoy your being there.
Let's face it, either where you are right now - all is going well, in which case all good. Or it's not going well - in which case you haven't got time to dwell on it.
