Fairy Glen Hydro Scheme

Post by Dan Yates. » Thu Nov 05, 2015 11:09 pm

It is a really critical time in the campaign against the hydro scheme on the Glen. Save the Conwy is working flat out in partnership with the Snowdonia Society, Woodland Trust, North Wales Wildlife Trust, Betws y Coed Anglers/Gwydir Fishery and Canoe Wales. Please have a look at our facebook page

https://www.facebook.com/savetheconwy/

website

http://savetheconwy.com/

and petition page

https://you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/ ... iver-conwy

to see what is happening.

Please sign the petition and write to the National Park (by the 13th Nov) even if you made a written objection in the first round. All the details on the website.

I signed a petition about 3/4 months ago. Is this a new one?

The previous petition was not set up or run by Save the Conwy, it looked like it was because someone , undoubtedly with the best intentions , ripped a page off our website and set it up without consulting us. I have no idea what happened to it or where it was sent. This petition is set up with the Snowdonia Society who we are working closely with, it would be great if you could sign it but even better if you could also write to the National Park, even if you have written before. Information on how to do this is here:

http://savetheconwy.com/2015/11/04/what-you-can-do-now/

Campaigning against hydros has (with the exception of the Braan) been massively unsuccessful. Save the Conwy is trying a tactic of working with several organizations , community councils , locals , fishermen and many others in a co-ordinated way. Whether it will work or not remains to be seen but it will only succeed if people engage with us. Please help us by signing petitions , writing emails , attending meeting and spreading the word. We are trying to get all the information we can out to people on how they can do this.

This is not just a campaign for the Fairy Glen but a test case on how protected sites within National Parks will be managed or exploited in the future.

Today is final day for submitting objections to the planning application.

The link has template email. You just add your points (There is a whole section that highlights the main areas affected) and your name/contact/background (paddler/outdoor person/coach/walker/swimmer/angler)

http://savetheconwy.com/2015/11/04/what-you-can-do-now/

Take you fifteen mins tops to fire off this email! It's what lunch breaks are for, saving rivers.

Please do this, and if you are in a club ask the committee to send a club objection as well.

Ta.

I know loads of paddlers sent letters, thanks for doing that.

Thanks to the save the Conwy Team who have been on the ball with this, and thanks that they continue to press for the security of the river.

The following link makes for interesting reading, shows the way the energy companies are playing ball on this! (Read underhand; Employees placing corporate support in public consultation exercise concealing their business links!)

Please take the time to sign the petition and ask your friends to also, thanks

I signed the petition a couple of weeks ago. And now sadly 38degrees are spamming my email address. I'm afraid it'll be the last one of these I do.
Yes, I'm aware that there is an "unsubscribe" link in their emails, I have absolutely no desire to confirm to them that my email address is active. They shouldn't be doing it in the first place.
Great cause - lousy operating practice from 38 degrees. :(

I know what you mean.
I was put off signing 38 degrees petitions ages ago for the same reason.

38 Degrees seem to have completely lost the plot. They started off as a really good campaigning group but have developed a tabloid-style scaremongering approach, with poorly thought out campaigns, and a sometimes cavalier approach to the facts. I unsubscribed from all their stuff a few months ago.

I've been feeling the same way, at times their mails come across as almost bullying.

I've signed the petition, expecting to be spammed and to have to unsubscribe. I'm not, in this case, worried about telling them my email address is active, as they know that because I put it on the petition. But I agree, it's bad practice - they force you accept their intention to spam you if you want to sign the petition - there should be an opt-out.

The warning about the intakes on the Halton Rapids hydro is a concern for the Conwy. I've seen Dan's concern about a weir at a point from where many paddlers have had to be rescued, but a turbine intake is even worse.
