What boats do you use?

Post by gp.girl »

Last year when very bored waiting for the shuttle we worked out a points system for picking the winning make of kayak in the group.

1 number of boats made by them so 4 Pyranha boats=4 points
2 2 or more of the same model ( not counting different versions/sizes) so 3 burns=3 points etc
3 In event of a draw- matching size and colour came in

Groups vary a lot in what makes/boats they use so in this case there were a lot of Jacksons-mostly Villiens but slightly more Daggers :)
I reckon people buy the same boats as their friends/club use because thats what you get to try most or is it just seeing them and personal recomendations? Anyone went out and bought something totally different from everyone else or what you thought you'd like?

This weekend we will be taking 5 burns (3 small 2 medium) and a nano!
I can roll :)

I'm loyal to pyranhas I think because they're the first boats I paddled (micro h2 h3 tried an m3 then my mothers burn) and subsequently I owned (s:6 then a burn) had a riot and a wavesport both playboats and few others, now own a mk1 burn again and recently became an owner of a wavesport transformer, which I've fell in love with. I tend to go for older playboats. If I could have found an old s:8 id have bought that instead of the t4.

I hear pyranhas built quality isn't what it used to be but i still think they're the best creek boats

Well in our house we have 4 current Pyranha, 2 Dagger, 1 Zet, 1 Jackson, 2 Tiderace, 1 Wilderness Systems, 1 Mega, 1 Dirty Habits, 3 retired Pyranha and a Eurokayaks Seayak. So Pyranha rule but you can be sure none of them are burns.

In my household we've got three sizes of Axiom and a Zet Director. The kids really liked the Axioms so I got one too :)

Current fleet 3 pyranhas (burn, everest, nano) 2 daggers (GTS, Rival) an esquif vertige and an apache tribe. Possible extra canoe coming but it depends on how bad the damage is. Not all tried before buying, but most paddled/recommended by friends. Have been asked about the GTS as a boat and gave the warning that you will swim if you don't get it right, they bought a Mamba....

I think your fleet is more varied as well as bigger :)

Nano was almost new and seems to be just fine but have heard stories of all sorts of problems.

Now that's got to be a bit of a contrast to a director.

It's a bit easier to do stern squirts in, that's for sure!

One Liquid Logic Stomper , a Jefe, a Wavesport D65, an old Pyrahna Inazone, a Perception Arc and a canoe of unknown origin. The fleet may be expanding soon to include a play boat.

Crikey, this could be a challenge!

1 Eskimo (Spud, squashed)
1 Pyranha (Burn)
1 Liquid Logic (Session+, currently C1)
1 Riot (Glide, best boat ever - its even in my avatar!)
1 possibly Trylon mould, maybe home built (Snipe, needs the nose fixing again after Hurley old skool)
1 possibly Trylon mould, maybe home built (Sea King)
1 Rockpool (Taran)
1 Dagger (Ocoee)
1 Blackfly (Option)
1 Galasport (MEXXL)
1 Vajda (iScream XXL)
1 Nomad (Force I think - Polo boat)
1 Unknown (old kevlar slalom C1 that I have hacked up a bit, well a lot)
1 Apache (16)
I gave my old Arrowcraft Maverick to the club recently when I got the iScream.

Previously I have also owned:
Another Eskimo Spud, the current one is the insurance replacement after it died in an RTA so technically it is/was the same boat
1 Perception Corsica S (which I part ex'ed for the first spud)

I'm trying to remember when I last paddled my spud - I know I lent it to Bruce for Hurley last year and I was in it in about March last year, but it is possibly the only one of the current 14 boats (plus the one I gave away) that I haven't paddled myself in the last 12 months, although I probably have and just can't remember.....

Have I ruined your stats? :)

I'd say as a group we favour Pyranhas..

I have 2 Pyranha - Burn & Varun and have "permenantly borrowed" a Bliss Stick playboat.

No brand seems to inspire loyalty quite like Pyranha does, I've always wondered why!

Of course, I am a Pyranha loyalist with my burn, fusion and Jed...

I shall try to remember them all
1 Jackson (Allstar)
1 Wavesport (Foreplay)
2 Eskimo (Current Salto & old patched up split Salto used for flat water only)
1 Mega (Edge)
1 Random (Attack)
3 P&H (2 MkII Surfers and a SurphSki)
3 Valley (Moccasin, prodigy & Anus Acuta)
1 Downtime (Hellbender)
1 Trylon (Weaver)
1 Arrowcraft (SurfYak)
1 Macski (old custom ski made for someone smaller than me)
3 different unknown makers (all weird things I got off ebay)

I am pretty sure I am missing some from that list but by your scoring system it looks like P&H win for me with 5 points (three different craft + 2 points for a pair). Shame I rarely use any of them and the SurphSki is really terrible.

Is this your current fleet, or a catalogue of boats past and present?

Current fleet. It is a tad excessive but quite a few of them were very cheap.

Current fleet comprises:

Liquid Logic Stomper 90
Pyranha Sub-7 2 ball
Downtime Hellbender
Arrowcraft Nemesis

Looks like I have varied tastes, although over the years I've probably owned more Pyranhas than any other brand.

That is where my boats live. I put the on garden furniture which seems to stop snails joining me when I am on the river. I have started putting racks up on the side of the house though. A slow project but I think I will have it finished by next summer. I get away with it because my wife paddles as well.

I want another couple of boats, but I've already bought 4 this year and was already running out of places to store them.

Replace the furniture in your living room with whichever boats are not being used at the time. A coupl of cushions and a lamp and you might just get away with it.

Mad river Horizon 15, Easky 17lv and Dagger GTX- although would really prefer a remix now.

Axiom also here too. Easky 13 leaving to new home soon.

Have paddled LOADS of different boats and take any chance to paddle any boats I get offered to try, from speeder to bellboat to birchbark canoe to hobie foot pedal kayak to sit on top to... coracle was not my best skill. I am much too wobbly in that.
The woods would be silent if no bird sang except those that sing best.
