What have you found in the river while paddling
What have you found in the river while paddling
When I have been paddling down the rivers in South Wales, there have been some things of interest found along the way...The most interesting has been some old clay pipes mostly intact in the morriston playspot near Swansea, handed in to the Neath Museum, Some nice bits of china and in contrast dead sheep...the odd broken paddle usually in higher grade rivers...and returned to owners if they have contact details etc. What have you found on your river trips..

An evil looking lizard/dinosaur toy, found on the first-in-a-very-long-time descent of the Arth last January. We named him Horace and he lived in my car for the best part of a year. Sadly I think we lost him around the time of Teifi Tour (or he might be somewhere under a seat, I don't actually know).

Many dead sheep, a live sheep (which we managed to get out eventually) and a headless swan.
A crossbow bolt (a couple of weeks after some fishermen told us they'd "shoot us" if we tried to get out near their swims).
Loads of fishing floats, plugs & spinners which I either give to any fishermen we pass or go in a tub in the garage....
My stolen Magic Bat 6 months after it had been taken - complete with some toerag sat in it fishing...

Well - that's 4 times as many dead bodies than I've run into whilst paddling.Randy Fandango wrote:I found two fairly rotted dead bodies on the Bhote Kosi once.

South Wales - a car suspended in a tree overhanging a river, about 10' out of the water.
South Wales - an eddy with a pyramid of shopping trolleys, about 6 high.
Nepal - not me personally but on same trip, a human head in an eddy following cremation.

A bag of weed next to a rapid on the LLugwy. It was my 30th birthday. It didn't go to waste, so I hear.
Topless sunbathers is always a favourite.
It's amazing how big a dead sheep can inflate, and how smelly (Spean Gorge).

A garden trampoline about 8' up a tree on the river Mole it's been there since Christmas 2013
A mobility scooter and a push bike side by side in the Wey the weekend before last.
A car complete with roof rack and straps in the Rio Noguara Palerisa about half a km from any possible track?
One very cold and confused old lady who had lost her way and ended up falling in the river Wandle.

On another note I've found numerous snakes taking a dip or sunbathing on the banks of the 'canals' of sunny Thamesmead -- very entertaining if you're teaching a group of children.

Dead dog at the sluice gate in central Cambridge. Me: "there's a dead lamb". Boyfriend: "Nah, it's just a plastic bag... Oh."
Another notable find was a fishing line hooked onto a bicycle which snagged my boyfriend's leg. Reasons to carry your river knife #234...

Wheelie bin - does go in a canoe (Woodmill)
Dead duck, floating feet up (Wye)
2 drunks clinging to a tree - they'd come out of their hire canoe. Never did find the beer they'd lost when they capsized (Symonds yat)
