Where did all the banter go?

Post by markayak »

I have been off the scene for a long time (nearly 7 years) but on return to UKRGB there seems to be a distinct lack of the banter and funny threads that entertained me so much in previous years. can some one not just start ripping on Dan Heyworth or something lol (dan i love you man)

Facebook?

I miss the long-running threads about nothing in particular. I think this had potential: http://www.ukriversguidebook.co.uk/foru ... 3&t=116389

but it doesn't get anywhere near to the classics:

I gave up because my sense of humour obviously wasn't and that people tended to assume I was being serious.
Issues regarding the bcu and access became quite regular and although often interesting were/are not really banter fodder.

I blame it entirely on the lack of Krikkits and Baby-faced Scots.

Plus it's paddling season. Folks is always more doolally off-season like.

ahh - banter!

Mind you, there's banter and humour - and then there's gratuitous and unnecessary profanity. Banter and humour are good - rather like in a pub / campfire conversation, that can go off in all sorts of directions and tangents.

Very good.

Did you know that just after Easter last year there was missed opportunity to get another similar photo of the same guy on the Etive. He approached triple 2 in his yellow canoe but capsized to his off side (left) just above and ran it upside down just to the right of where he is in THE photo. Spectators say the boat stood vertically in the hole for a few seconds with the back of his BA showing on the surface and if he hadn't been trying to roll it, the boat may well have looped back upright.

Unfortunately the muppet with the go-pro put it down to pick up his throwline (even though there were 2 others covering it with lines from the same spot, and the level was a little lower making self rescue of a canoe on the rock in the middle pretty easy) so there is no footage and no stills grabs from the footage because it doesn't exist.....

Maybe I'll manage it again over new year with a photographer/videographer that understands the importance of his/her role?

Well I would link to the threads I started but they were removed.

I queried this in a message and your response was:

"Sorry, we try to discourage threads about the pros and cons of UKRGB and its members. They rarely pan out constructively."

I think that the fact UKRGB is still alive and well, all be it slightly different in content than before I left the site is testament to the fact that there is room in this busy social media world and sites like Facebook etc. have their place but are of no direct threat. I just remember the good old days, sat behind my desk, dreaming of the evening or weekends kayaking and trolling through the forums that helped me through the monotony of my working day.

ukrgb has the advantage of being able to find threads / information from months or weeks ago, whereas FB 'banter' is much more spur of the moment then vanishes away never to be seen again. Both have their place.

I agree more Dan 'Eyworth bashing is to be encouraged, on both sites.

Best ukrgb banter ever? Two words: "Listen love......."

The advantage of the UKRGB over any other social media type is the Guidebook part with all the information needed there
The more apparently complex an act, the more vital it is to search until you find its inner simplicity

Two people I can think of offhand who fit that description... Quickdraw McCraw is a possibility, but my money is on RyanP, aka. SwamP or his previous incarnation: The Shell.

Dave has pretty much stopped paddling now. Completely different person than you might expect from his banter, really nice guy.

Unfortunately Mr McCraw got into road biking in a big way - with a particular penchant for recumbants and Audax rides. Despite this major character flaw, the missus and I occasionally concede to the occasional visit - we're meeting up with them over new year and I may try to drag him back out onto a river... :-)

If you are successful, look for the group driving around with short canoes - I should be with them (there may be a few kayaks too). Be good to see you all again.

Boo... this should be in addition to kayaking, not a replacement for it. (No-one should want to bike in the wet!)

Personally I don't get road biking. More dangerous than kayaking IMO. At least our obstacles are static, not moving at 60 mph...
