A kayaking web series from India

Post by joereadickins »

We've managed to blag our vehicle for free on the grounds that this is going to be a super awesome viral internet sensation, so if you like the video and feel like sharing it around we'd be super grateful!

We're also making some mini edits - one super cool easier trib we did avoiding a gorge that looked like what I guess high water Zam must be like....almost certainly an epic first to be snatched up in low water

Agreed. You've really raised the bar with this web series.
Also no idea how you managed to blag a free car for however many months.
Exceptional effort!
Are Ford India linking to the series at all? If no, it might be worth seeing if they'll feature one of your more vehicle heavy episodes on their website. May get more views from a slightly different audience?

You would think that makes sense, but one thing we're learning on this trip is that corperate India really doesn't make any sense!!!

That's a great idea! I'd love to have a map of our journey so I'll put a rough one together tomorrow. I have a feeling it'll be a tad more than 5000km!

Just packing up for a long drive to the Kopili river near Umrangso, just over the border in Assam. So you can add that one to the list!

Are you driving yourselves? If so, you are all considerably braver than even the paddling suggests...

Here's the map as promised - not nearly completed but I've embeded all of the videos at the excellent recommendation of Sundaykayaker. It will show (some of) the rivers we paddled, places we stayed, how we got around and hopefully much, much more. I'll be improving it in the next few days so keep revisiting for the full picture! And yes, we did lots of driving in India - scary stuff!

Latest episode from the first descent of the Umtrew, a real gem, three hours from Shillong, totally class whitewater!

For your next episode, please feature something really lame and disappointing... It would make me happier than you could imagine.

You may well be in luck Mark - (Thankfully?) I wasn't there but next episode will feature what was certainly the biggest epic (type 2 fun) of the trip... The stories are good and I am certainly looking forward to the video!

Yep, currently in Arunanchal Pradesh. Last thing I heard was they were on route to the Siang river (it's pretty big, I looked it up on youtube!) However we still have a few more episodes from Meghalaya in the pipeline first...

What sort of gradient was that last run over the whole length / during the steepest section.
Just want to compare it to my rule of thumb for new rivers!

I believe it maxes out at about ~35km/km

There were two steep sections separated by 15km of flat/grade 2. Max gradient was about 40m/km towards the end of the first section. I think slightly lower water levels would make it less of a portage fest, either that or trying to find a put-in halfway down and avoiding all the scary bits from the first few days!

Image

Red arrow was the put-in (also the line on the gradient profile) and we finished in Ukiam

Is this the biggest (in terms of miles/ km traveled) and (in terms of time) Expedition.

I suspect the number of miles/km will probably remain about the same ;-)

Episode 9 is now up, definitely my favorite river in the world, runnable at a tonne of different levels, including a pretty scary high water descent.
