What's the paddling season around Portland Oregon?

Post by Peter Brown » Wed Jul 02, 2014 3:10 pm

Is there year round grade 4-5? When's best? Might get chance to go with work for a while. Also keen to know whether there's good mountain biking year round.

Its a year round place, although summer can get low. Autumn rains, spring snow melt and even during the cold winter, fair sport can be had. Autumn or spring is probably best.

At Easter, we were cold (similar weather and temp to Devon in Oct) and had no shortage of water...in fact, many of the classic harder runs too high. Whilst we never came close to running out of paddling, I think May would be best.

I took my boat up over New Year hoping to get in a day or two of paddling. Ended up stayed up there for 3 weeks and was never short of stuff to do.

Get used to paddling class V with poggies on.

Fun times.

We toured around Washington, Idaho and northern Oregon in one trip, probably April-May time, seriously no shortage of things to paddle then. Oddly the Clackamas near Portland was running off and Bob's hole wasn't as playful as it could have been, everything else was well up.

Just recently I have been following Mark Scantlebury's youtube channel, I think the club is based around Portland so all the runs are relatively local: https://www.youtube.com/user/mscantlebury
I'm pretty sure Jeff Compton, (on the left) is also based in Portland, he is at the forefront of pushing the boundaries in rafts (I think Dan is his usual paddling partner) - spent a pleasant day floating down the canyon on Jeff's raft chatting about different rivers :)

Not too far north from Portland (in Washington) is the Olympic peninsula - it is more 'discovered' now than when most of the guides were written but still offers some pretty remote paddling in an area with few roads.....
