Everest Kayak Expedition On BBC 4 Saturday 28th Dec At 22:00

Post by nick 16 »

Documentary on the Mike Jones and gang expedition is on BBC 4 at 22:00 Saturday 28th then on Wed 8th Jan at 23:30. It's in a series of different ways of doing Everest. It's a bit early but i thought folks might be interested.

Good find. I have put it on my diary. Also might want to check this out:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/progin ... -snow.html

I saw a clip yesterday and it looked quite interesting. It's basically Dan Snow and two others taking a wooden rowing boat through the Grand Canyon. The short bit I saw had some carnage. Better than the usual guff on TV.

Epic stuff! Should be on iplayer until 6th Jan at this link http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0 ... _By_Canoe/.

Love the early GoPros - each the size of a toaster. It's old school but well worth a watch!

Love the quote,
"By now they were confident they were masters of the river and looking at the bottom was just a prelude to flipping up again!"

I've mastered more rivers than I thought in that case!

Funny to see John Gosling of Paddles Up fame there as well (who also filmed the recent Llangollen Extreme Slalom event).

The size of those cameras on the front of the boat must have made things far harder! I noticed too that they also had massive battery packs gaffer taped to the back of the boats as well!

Next time someone insists on wearing a drysuit to Cardiff in the summer they should be made to watch this film!

Most interesting thing to me were the techniques being used. It just goes to show how much things have developed.

The boats were the original Pyranha Everests! Pyranha has since used the name for plastic boats sold with the expedition market in mind.
I have a dog, his name is Erik.

Superb slomo.
So many good quotes in the commentary.
"paddles costing £25!"
The final two man run "with minimal kit, a sleeping bag and the last of the group's Dundee cake"
Leo Dickinson dangling over the gorge to get those amazing overhead shots.
Very much a piece of its time, incredible danger, but so understated and all the more effective because if it.
That was true adventuring

This was big news at the time, (1970s), and the only kayaking expedition, I am aware of, that was widely reported in the mainstream media. ITV News at Ten had progress reports and the film was initially shown prime time on ITV. They also drove to Nepal and back in a minibus! Proper expedition! The DVD is worth getting as it has lots of additional footage.

Have another look and you will see plenty of evidence of gaffer tape it was well used at that time. the food tasting of fibre glass resin was down to a John Gosling/Mike Jones brainwave. Having written out looking for support they got various donations of support (hence the Dundee cake). However rather than having lots of boxes with different stuff that they had to carry throughout the trip the broke it down into regular supplies, meant that as they finished a load they could pay off the porter etc. So the boxes had a mix of foodstuffs, fuel and food. Unfortunately the taste of the resin spread throughout everything in the box!

I remember as a teenager at one of Mike's lectures the great emphasis that was placed on the learning never to mix repair kit with foodstuffs on future expeditions.

Just watched this on iplayer - fantastic.

They held on to their paddles which were custom made for each individual and cost £25 each!!!! Lol (incidentally they're all wooden, 90 feather and look the same as each other!)

That was an epic swim though in that gear.

Looked like an epic swim in any gear!

The £25 paddle comment had me in hysterics. But I suppose back then it seemed rather more!

Don't forget this was the early seventies and low tech. Modern gear has cranked all the grades up a few notches.

There was a time when Cenarth Falls were considered unrunnable, now Uni freshers do it every year on the Teifi tour.
