Fave Rapid/Feature names

Post by DaveBland »

Was just e-reccying some SE USA runs last night and came across my fave rapid name ever.
"Diaper Wiper" for a big slide rapid. Hilarious.

Who's got some more good-uns to share?

After a friend of ours got flipped at Public Toilet Falls, it is now known as "Lew Roll Falls" by us.

There's a local run in the Afan Valley with a small section called 'magnetic boulder rapid.'
Always makes me smile. Sure enough, every time I paddle it, someone in the group is drawn into the very large boulder at the bottom of the section.

Also Victoria's Hole (giggity) on the NEsk, though this is just an AUCC name.

I took a raft trip down the Ubaye Racecourse onceand the guide had a name for all of the rapids, I don't know if tgey are regularly used. A few:

La Cuisinier
La Velodrome
Le Salle de Bain

On the Aberglaslyn Gorge there are (for some of us anyway) Garry's Ledge and the Temporal Focus Graduation Drop.

Not an epic feature by any means, but there's "Killer Rock" at Matlock. Needless to say, on my first day kayaking, walking back past the slalom course after dropping the cars there scared the bejaysus out of me hearing fellow paddlers looking over the wall saying "so how's killer looking today then?"

When I went down there when I was little kid in my Dancer XS I asked where killer rock was as it was worrying me - I was informed by my Mum that I had just paddled past it!!!!!

I've heard of a feature named "The Hole that ate The Hole that ate Chiago" the awkwardly recursive nature of which which has always tickled me... I kind of assumed it was near or with "The Hole that ate Chicago" on the Stikine, but I'm not so sure, I don't recollect first hearing it very well.

Named rapids are always amusing when you know the person (or people) involved... Though "Dave's Hole" on the Ogwen has now developed a taste for people named Dave.

I do like the name 'the hole that ate the hole' but on that river Another F****** Problem and Not Another F****** Problem stand out as well named pieces. I am not one for names, although tallywhacker falls on the Mai Khola in Nepal and 18 down on the Zanskar always make me smile.

Groo. On the mickey mouse run in Valldall.
Not sure if thats the correct spelling. A local paddler informed us that the hole was named after a local girl, as its a sticky little hole that everyone gets stuck in sometime.

Also haven't paddled it but I think the Robe canyon (might be wrong) has a rapid in it called Ol' Dirty Bastard which is just awesome.

There is a rapid on the run-out of the Green River Narrows "If this rapid was on any other river it would have a name" I thought this was both clever and fitting.

A slight tangent but I was interested in the comment about the Ogwen as there's a 'Dave's Hole' on the Nevis too. This leads to all sorts of questions.

1. Is Dave the most common persons name attached to retentive features on rivers?
2. Are there a disproportionately large number of Dave's who paddle therefore statistically they will have more features named after them?
3. Is Dave a very common name in general?
4. Are Dave's just better at getting stuck in holes?

Discuss....

The Wizards Sleeve on The Karnali. Named after the large gnarly hole near the bottom.
