Hi there, a very very very open ended question....
basically, I've just secured myself a place on a summer school in Hong Kong, and wondered if anyone knew of any whitewater kayaking down that direction? I've never thought of going to China for kayaking but I know a lot of people do, so thought I'd see if anyone had any starting points for me to look at, on the off-chance I'd be able to get boating while I'm out there!!!
I'm G3/4 happy, so I'm not talking crazy boating off hundred-footers, but I am mad for kayaking, and would do what I could to get boating while I'm out there!!! Obviously, China's slightly large, so I'm talking about close to Hong Kong as possible, but all suggestions/advice is welcomed!
Cheers!
Whitewater Kayaking in South East China - ANY IDEAS?
Re: Whitewater Kayaking in South East China - ANY IDEAS?
Hey,
Unfortunately Eastern China is pretty well developed for hydropower but there are some rad rain fed creeks and waterfalls to be found and plenty of class II/III.
If you have some free time, I can put you in touch with some paddlers in Guangzhou; just jump on the high speed from Kunshan and you'll be there in a jiffy.
The boaters in Guangzhou will also head up to Zhejiang in July for a kayaking festival and Chongqing in September for another.
Best,
Tom

Oh wow, yeah that'd be awesome! I'll be there throughout July, so I'll definitely get in touch! I have Fridays-Mondays free so could definitely make a trip out! This is going to be an aaaaaawesome Summer!
Have you done a lot of kayaking out in China I take it?
Thanks very much for the response, I wasn't sure whether I'd get anyone as helpful as that! :D

Certainly wouldn't say that "a lot of people" go to China for kayaking, but it's a huge place and there's lots of rivers to go at!adibell wrote:I've never thought of going to China for kayaking but I know a lot of people do, so thought I'd see if anyone had any starting points for me to look at, on the off-chance I'd be able to get boating while I'm out there!!!
If anyone on this board is going to be able to give you good info/contacts on boating in China, Tom is probably the best man for the job!

Hi, I know this is an old post, but this is exactly the info I am looking for.
I'm currently in Guangzhou, been here 3 months and will be here another 9 months. Desperate to get back on the water!
Any help would be very appreciated
Thanks
p.s. I don't mind travelling anywhere in China

Fly to Bejing then internal flight to Chendu and you are there. Saw a climbing lecture can't remember who it was but he pointed out that it is cheaper to fly to Chinal and on to Chendu to climb than going to Chamonix for the summer. The walk in pics showed a great river. It is waiting to be explored is all I can say form various bits and pieces of information that have come through to me here and there. Had an email from Slime the other day saying much the same as he had been gleaning information in a bar or cafe in KMD.

Thanks Dave,
I'm looking for some paddling buddies too, so hopefully someone is about in this area.
Will have a look at Chengdu also。
Cheers!
