Crawick Trees (Oct 2013)

Post by Jim » Sat Oct 26, 2013 1:21 am

Had a run down the Crawick today, forgot to check here first but the reports are way out of date anyway.

Really nice run apart from a couple of tree portages.

First tree was a short way into the gorge right across at river level, too high to try to paddle over. We had a go at shifting it but just too much weight of water pressing on it. Also the river left end has a branch below the surface which appears to to under bedrock.... We portaged river right. This tree is well seasoned and should saw easily.

The second tree is down into the river at an angle covering a nice looking rapid. There is clearly a trunk coming down blocking the line to the left of a pourover, there seems to be a much longer trunk stretching right across to the right bank blocking the line to the right of the pourover. We portaged right again, but when we got level with the end of the tree we found it short of the bank by exactly a boat width, and the line hard against that side is actually the ideal line anyway so this could probably be run with care but would need scouting first.

The lower part of the gorge (several slightly harder drops close together) was clear of trees at river level, but I did notice one trunk spanning the gorge about 10 feet over heads.

Cracking little river, mostly clear of trees compared to earlier reports, but definitely don't go round any blind corners!

We were there yesterday. sounds like about the same levels. Both of those trees still there, but no more have joined them. Managed to paddle over the first tree - we found a route hard left, went sweet. This isnt obvious from the river and would be VERY EASY TO GET WRONG. The second went fine as well hard right. Have to agree with you Jim nice little river.
