Hydro application for the Ular Burn, Aberfeldy - approved

Hi there, information on this below and via the link to the local newspaper.

Beauty spot hydro-electric station backed
COUNCILLORS BACKED a hydro scheme near a highland Perthshire beauty spot yesterday, after being assured that it would have minimal impact
Landowner Donald Ogilvy-Watson told Perth and Kinross Council’s development control committee that his hydro-electric station at the Urlar Burn, Aberfeldy, would generate enough renewable energy to power 1000 homes.
A portion of the scheme runs through the famed Birks of Aberfeldy, a popular tourist draw and a site of special scientific interest.
Mr Ogilvy-Watson said that to protect a nationally scarce plant, the cow-wheat, there would be no power generation from mid-March to mid-May.
He also told the committee that only an agreed amount of water was removed, so that there would be no impact on the popular Moness Falls.
Committee convener Councillor Willie Wilson said that while there was a great desire to create green energy, it had to be ensured that the environment was also protected and in this case he believed the balance had been met.
Ward councillor Ken Lyall said that people seemed to be satisfied with the assurances and there was little opposition to the plan.
The committee agreed and the application was unanimously approved, subject to conditions.

Still plenty of hurdles. The land for the power sta and some of the pipe belongs tothe local community and is looked after by Perth & Kinross Council common good fund. They have to give approval on our behalf and there are a lot of people against it because it will have an adverse effect on tourism. WELL IT SURE AS HELL ISNT GOING TO INCREASE TOURISM. So why take the risk.
Its still time to right to the P&K councillors and voice your disapproval. Mr Townsend President of the Mountaineering Cof S is certainly not impressed.
