Spean Gorge - River Wide Strainer

Post by PeteF » Mon Jan 30, 2012 7:34 pm

On Saturday 28th January 2012 we found a strainer on the Spean Gorge.

Its located at the bottom of Fairy Steps and is river wide - pine tree between 12 and 18 inches in diameter.

At the level on Saturday (1.5 on the gauge at Spean Bridge) the trunk was just above water. There also appears to be a separate rootball of several smaller trees caught against this on river right - these were all vertical. It is on the upstream face of the same rock as the forked branch that has been there years.

Not sure how long this has been here or how long it will be there as it did seem fairly loose but due to its length even if it does move from here I would doubt it would make its way fully out of the gorge. The day before when the level was at 3.5 we didnt see it but think we can remember the vertical stumps.

Our group walked round river left on the rock slabs from above the top step but small, competent groups can find eddies on the way down - just dont swim!

Paddled this again at a lower level than before and found one more tree that could cause problems. Check the link http://www.boistelle.blogspot.com/2012/ ... spean.html

and chopped up the tree lying over the river
at the fairy steps with a chainsaw
problem sorted
