Tree in Afon Seiont

Post by SurfLines » Sat Aug 18, 2012 9:56 pm

Just a quick warning for anyone heading out paddling the Seiont in North Wales. Recent heavy winds have brought down a pretty big tree which is sitting riverwide at the second campsite (the one with no tents and only static caravans). The tree is pretty obvious from about 50m+ upstream.

As you approach the campsite you'll pass under a small bridge and the tree is immediately after the first grade 2/3 drop. At high water levels is possible to sneak left or right or even over the middle of the tree (for a potentially highly risky line). However, when the water drops a little it is unlikely any of these lines will go. The left line also has further hanging tree hazards immediately after the fallen tree. A break out just above the tree on the right followed by a sneak worked nicely, but only because the river was out of its banks slightly on this occasion.

Fishermen remain vocally unhappy about the presence of paddlers on the river. Caravanners proved friendly as ever and even made sure to wave and point the tree out.

Happy and safe paddling!

Any tips on where to get on and off the Seiont to avoid the angry locals as much as possible?

We tried to get on the river earlier this year but couldn't find a place with public access and were met with such aggression from the locals that we daren't access the river across private land....

Park in the housing estate and run down the hill to the bridge opposite the pub. Not had an issue but be quick... Oh and the easiest place to get over that fence is far right. Next to the bridge stantion. ... 4,,0,-6.92

Get out here. Its a dead end into a quarry. Never had any issues here either. ... sz=17&z=17
