Thetford to Brandon 14km

Post by nearlyadam »

I'm planning this as kayak a day trip. I've read a few reports (on https://gopaddling.info/paddlepoints/) of fallen trees on this route. If anyone knows of updates to this I'd appreciate a heads up, though I'm going anyway :-)

Planning to park behind the Travelodge, it looks like a free public carpark, then up to Brandon Leisure centre, likewise looks like a free carpark, likewise any local knowledge would be appreciated.

Will update once trip complete

Lovely peaceful and interesting trip along the edge of Thetford forest, no real issues with fallen trees, probably 5-10 all together none were a problem in a kayak. Total distance, according to Strava, 15.7 km

The launch at Thetford, behind the Travel lodge hotel is easy with a free carpark.

2 weirs needed porting, the first in Thetford has easy exit/access. The second just outside Thetford was just needed a bit of hunting rounds for a good exit, re-entry was fine. going downstream pick either side for exit as there is a bridge over the weir.

Several trees cross the river all have gaps to navigate (16/05/2021). The weeds were very thick near the power station to the extent that they formed islands in the river but they did not extend for more than 1-2km in total.

Exit at Brandon lock, work is on going so had to exit to port the lock then paddle across the river as the lock bridge is closed. Easy slipway to exit to the allotment carpark, or leave your car at the leisure centre, both free and not busy (Sunday, tail end of lockdown #3)

Great route. I added a few notes and pictures to paddle points
