There is no river access in Ironbridge by the paid Wharfage car park (TF8 7NH). All the river front land is private with no permission to access the river without paying. Jackfield just above the rapids is the only place to exit or launch on the Severn.

Where do people get on then? Unless things have changed in the last month, everyone
usually gets on from the Mill car park, and drop down the bank. Many people use it every week.
Why do you say there is no access there?

Rae1, do you know how long this access point has been used in this way? If it's been used for 20 years without objection, it may be a public right of way, and need to be be registered as such.

It has been used for a long time, and as far as I know is the only access point in Ironbridge. As it's a gorge, so difficult terrain, all around it is too steep to get on.
All the below mention the Car Park that is used by anyone entering the river at Ironbridge. ICBA to google any more, but this shows the use of this point is widespread.

The launch point is also used by racers:

If the landowner is now saying there is no access (which is what seems to be reported) they are entitled to do that, unless it's a right of way, either already on the Local Authority Definitive Map, or there is evidence of usage for 20 years without objection. An objection now doesn't matter if there's been 20 years before - but somebody (a local who can get the support of their Councillor) would need to apply for it to made a right of way, and the Council would need to accept the application. It may take time, so the sooner the better. Evidence can be photos, statements from club officials or paddlers, etc, but it must show at least 20 years use.

Considering the person who says there is no access joined on the day it was posted, and hasnt been back since, I'd guess there is some enmity towards paddlers.
If the access situation has changed, then I'm pretty sure there would be more than one anonymous post about the subject.
It's the West Midlands Region Dave Perry Memorial Paddle on Sunday from Bridgnorth, so I'll ask around then to see if anything has changed, and report back.

Speaking to a lot of people yesterday, none had heard of any new restrictions at Ironbridge.
One, a well known (now retired) canoe maker told me there had been access there for at least 30 years.

Having grown up in Telford and spending most of my formative paddling in the Ironbridge gorge most of the access points in Ironbridge are public access.
The rowing club, Dael End park, Wharfage got in an out of the river at all of these points in the last 25 year with no problems. After the actual Ironbridge there are no suitable access points until Backfield rapids. This is manage by Telford Canoe Club who could also help you with current access details.

I wonder if the Sharon Bailey above is the director of Shropshire Raft Tours. Odd as they're cited above as one of the regular users of the spot.
