The sloping weir half a mile below the MCC site has collapsed in the middle, leaving an ugly debris filled hole. I have only seen this in low water, but it would want careful inspection before running it.

BEWARE! A couple of fallen trees on the Goyt....

1/ Aprox. 400m upstream of the Marple Bridge weir. Spans the whole width of the river. Portage possible river left. I can see it moving anytime soon, its a monster!

2/ Tree across centre channel of 3-channel weir. Defienately avoid that centre channel. Abit of space down the right hand channel, left hand channel is all clear. Its been there at least 3 weeks, think its slowly being removed.

A couple of us ran the broken weir the other day (we lined each other just in case). It runs ok if you concentrate and make sure you get your line right. I tempted fate and ran it a second time - not a good idea - didn't get it as nice and could have got pinned.

Just be careful if you're thinking about running it.

Paddled the Goyt today (19th February 2011).

We normally shoot the horseshoe weir in Brabyns park in the river left corner.

Today there is a tree stuk in this corner, you probably would not notice it from your boat. The position of the tree is such that it might deflect you into the towback.

paddled down to Stockport today in opens. Good touring trip. Water levels with EA were 0.50 at Marple bridge. The broken weir changes everytime i paddle this river, good line down it in opens. Portaged the weir by the garden centre just after the bridge. After a few kms came to another weir which was about 2ft, do'able with care, then came to a big vertical weir which we portaged. The river go's into a gorge in Stockport and then there is a weir which looked nasty under the shopping centre so we did a tough escape from the river on the left into a car park.

I would reccommened this trip but get out just before Stockport on the B6104 near Vernon park.

I was on the trip with Andy today and as he said we bailed up steep banks ending up in Matalan car park. We intended to continue further but on seeing the commiting section called it a day.
From a bit of Googleing I think that from here the river goes under buildings for a few hundred feet and then emerges at the Mersey(?) confluence. After this it disappears for what looks like a very very long way under Stockport.

Does anyone have experience of paddling this section, specifically the underground bit and any weirs/drops? An idea of escape routes would also be good.

I haven't done it myself, but I know a few people that have. The weir before the shopping centre is committing, but hasn't caused any problems up to now. Apparently you get sight of the end of the tunnel just as you lose sight of the start. You can see some pictures of people paddling under Merseyway on the Manchester Canoe Club web site

Paddled 16/10/11 from Brabans Park to just above the Broken Weir in Marple.

Level on EA Gauge was 0.45m, a really nice level for coaching intro to moving water. Could have got away with a few centemetres less if needed.

The Horseshoe weir at Marple Garden Centre where a lot of people get off this stretch has bad/no access at the moment. It is a building site with security fences and no parking. You could get off below after running the weir if you're brave/foolish enough.

The works at Otterspool are still very much in operation so still not get out or parking at the weir.

We've been getting off just above the broken wier (after the MCC site) on river right. Quite a steep bank.
Park at the end of the lane in public car park and send someone to retrieve vehicles while others carry boats to road.

Just for reference:

Popped to the MCC slalom course when the EA river gauge was showing the day's (18th Feb) peak flow of about 0.8m.

At this level the course is pretty much washed out, the slalom pole wires are only about 1.5m above the river and the poles are in the water. The gabions are underwater.
The bottom rapid is just a big bouncy wave train pushing straight onto a cliff.
The top section of G2 is just one small drop with fast wave tongue.

Couldn't eddy hop any higher up the river due to the fast flow but the main G2 bit seemed very bouncy.

At 0.8m trees lining the banks are in the water and a few create big pinning potential. Very wide river at this level so take the correct line and there is no need to get too close to any trees.

RE the EA sloping weir in Brabyns Park.
"contractors are altering weir there is steelwork and ropes across the weir, the middle and left shute are roped off and blocked, dont go any where near, possible look at right shute or best option walk it"

Please be aware there is a tree across the river as you go round the bend after Manchester Canoe Clubs Site.You have to portage there is no way round it on the water, This could be very dangerous in high water.Dave

Hi All

There is no water anywhere at the moment, but what's the Goyt like when its low? Is any of it paddleable, two beginners in Kayaks and an open boat looking for something tomorrow?

If not any recommendations?

The goyt on low water is not a whole lot of fun very scrapy, but at the club there is normally enough water to launch and paddle around. The large eddy just below the club can be good practice for beginners to ferry from side to side. I know you posted this a while back but thought it might help.

Went down from the park to the club site today, 0.5 on the EA gauge good medium level.
There was a fallen tree just below the hole above the longer stretch of rapids (≃500m above the canoe site), I didnt see it until I was through the hole because im a blind haha. Easy enought to avoid but worth noting. Big eddy after the hole you can hop into then go through a 3m gap between the bush and the fallen tree.

Hi folks, Wigan Canoe Group paddled this Sun 20th Nov 16 from Brabbyns Park,down to the sharp left bend,100 mtrs ish from Otterspool Bridge. Grade 2/3 at 0.52. All the weirs where shot with care
having checked out the safe lines. The broken weir some distance below the slalom site
at the footbridge is ok, but not pleasant if swimming. One of our group got a few cuts and
scratches from something underwater.We used the takeout well before the bridge at
Otterspool, at the obvious left turning bend. We climbed out river right onto the wire covered
ledge, and within a few yards the road. Happy paddling, Steve H. Wigan Canoe Group.

With the exception of the first two weirs it's probably all grade 2 now. The first weir at Brabyn's was run centre (with water going over the sides), I've had better ideas. Horseshoe was run central, there is a load of flood debris and bank collapse river left. The weir below MCC at 0.51 provided no problem.

We got out at the wire mesh at Otterspool, as previously mentioned. It is a sewer overflow, and grim. It's worth noting there's now Stockport Hydro at Otterspool Bridge/weir.

I've made some routes on the online OS mapping tool, 3 maps - one is the run on the guide to MCC, then 2 loops, one short loop from MCC, up the canal and then down the river, and then one starting at either MCC or Brabyns, using the canal and Goyt. this has a longer portage at the park, and all loops have a hill to climb between the river and the canal.

I've done both loops, the longer one on boxing day, the shorter one several times last summer.
