Ravenglass Seaquest 2021 Report
After what has been a difficult 18 months, including the cancellation of last year's event, we were very pleased to announce that the 14th Ravenglass Seaquest could indeed take place on Sunday 11th of July. We didn't know what to expect or how many people would join us on the day, so we were heartened and extremely excited to welcome friends, old and new, so many paddlers in so many different craft, the excitement mounting as 70 boats were unloaded and were placed side by side on the beach. Many strategies were discussed by families and elite races alike, small differences in strategy might just make that difference necessary to win the prize! As always, we welcomed all self-propelled craft and we had entries from a good variety including inflatables, canoes, general purpose kayaks, sea kayaks and SUPs.
Ravenglass Seaquest is suitable for all levels of paddler. With three estuaries, at least one is going to be more sheltered depending on the weather conditions and there are plenty of points to go for on each one. Our points strategy is to put highest scoring controls near to the middle and lower reaches with the lowest scores at the far reaches of each estuary. On the day of the race this year, the weather conditions were calm and not too hot so an ideal day for the event. On such a perfect day there was always going to be a rush of paddlers returning towards the three-hour mark to get back, and we did indeed get some very fast sprints up to HQ to be checked in. Every minute did count.
With all souls and boats back on dry land, the presentations took place at the Ratty Arms in the sunshine. Full results are on the Copeland Canoe Club website: copelandcanoe.org.uk
Many thanks to everyone for participating, as well as having a fabulous day, we raised £403 for Local Community NHS.
Thanks for the many positive comments we received, it makes organising such an event really worthwhile.
