South Devon Sea Kayak Meet - 2014

Post by stormkayaker » Thu Feb 13, 2014 12:56 pm

South Devon Sea Kayak Meet – 2014

Originally conceived by Mark Rainsley as a way for paddlers to meet new peers and develop skills to paddle on their own initiative in safe group sizes and conditions. This meeting has previously been hosted in South Devon, Corfe Castle in South Dorset and, for the past 2 years, by Mike Mayberry in Pembrokeshire.

For 2014 the venue will again be in South Devon, this time based at King Edward VI Community College (KEVICC), a short walk from the town of Totnes, the administrative centre of the ‘South Devon Area Of National Beauty.’ http://www.southdevonaonb.org.uk/about-the-aonb

Dates: Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th July 2014.

Cost £35.00 per person, for which you get the use of a level, grassed camping area, male and female showers (communal style, not individual cubicles), WC facilities and parking for cars and camper vans and the opportunity to enjoy some of the best paddling in the South.

As before, the format will be low key with paddling trips being proposed by volunteer guides whose main responsibility is to get you to the access point and help sort a shuttle if needed. Paddlers take part in these trips as self-sufficient members of a peer group.

There will be a variety of paddles each day to suit varying abilities and of course the prevailing weather.

The local area offers sheltered rias (estuaries), open coastline, lots of rock hopping, beautiful beaches (many only accessible from the sea) tide races and longer one way paddling opportunities for the more masochistic amongst you.

For those choosing not to paddle there are numerous opportunities for costal walks, beaches to explore, the towns of Totnes, Dartmouth, Kingsbridge and Salcombe all of which have numerous café’s, coffee shops, pubs and other ‘attractions’.

Numbers will again be limited to 100 people (whether paddlers or not) and all proceeds from the weekend will be split equally between the RNLI and Dartmoor Rescue. Both these organisations are very active in the local area and rely on donations in order to continue to provide much needed emergency cover in the event of emergencies both on the sea, on the rivers and on land.

We would be pleased to hear from anyone willing to act as a ‘guide’ for the event. In the past there have been 2 guides for each group on the water and 10 or so trips running each day.

To register for the meeting please send an email confirming that you have paid the appropriate sum to: sdskm2014@seaborne.net

Payment to secure your booking by PayPal please to: sdskm2014@seaborne.net

We look forward to welcoming you to South Devon in July,

Hey Rob, get paid up as places are filling up already!

Tomorrow we are committed to an orienteering event on Dartmoor with the girls so have a good paddle on The loop without us...

Are you going to offer to guide some trips in July?

Paul.

Plenty of places left at present but bookings coming in steadily so don't leave it too late...

Local Pub happy to provide roast carvery for £5.00 a head on each evening, good local beers and a chance to meet some colourful locals!

We will have a small fleet of Tiderace Kayaks available if anyone wants to demo a boat while they are here and AS Watersports our fantastic local Canoe and Kayak store are just a short distance away if you need any kit!

Bookings going well with over a third of places allocated already.
As before all profit is going to charity - Dartmoor Rescue and RNLI.

Get a booking in now if you can. There are lots of excellent campsites in the area if you wish to extend your stay.

Hopefully Mark Rainsley will also run an event later in the summer so two good reasons to travel south this year.

Paul.

Adam, you will be welcome for any day even if you can't stay over.

Just book a place if you would please and hopefully we can easily make £35.00 worthwhile!

SDSKM - 2014 now more than 50% booked with more bookings coming in so don't miss your chance!

We can only take 100 bookings so once the places are gone that's it I'm afraid. All proceeds going to RNLI and Dartmoor Rescue.

This is a great opportunity to meet other paddlers and enjoy time on the water together. You need to be self contained as a member of a 'peer group' and able to look after yourself and those around you.

Come and enjoy all the best paddling in South Devon, estuaries, secret beaches, rocky cliffs and committing coastline, tideraces and beautiful scenery, all from the cockpit of your sea kayak.

Totnes itself has great facilities for eating and drinking all a short level walk away.

Look forward to meeting you all in July,

Sorry for late enquiry, do you still have space, if so does the campsite allow dogs. Thanks. Guy.

Guy, we still have some spaces and you are welcome to join us. Unfortunately as this is a Community College site we are not allowed dogs I'm afraid, sorry.

Anyone else looking for a last minute weekend paddling plan? £35.00 per head for paddlers or non paddlers alike. All proceeds to RNLI and Dartmoor Rescue.

Meet Friday evening or Saturday morning in Totnes. Go paddling in good company on a beautiful coastline and with guaranteed fantastic weather - well, we will do our best with the weather! Currently looking ok...

Look forward to seeing all those already signed up on Friday evening.

Hi Paul & Julie,
Just wanted to thank you both for a great weekend. Also, special thanks to everyone who joined the Saturday trip from South Milton to Stoke Beach - great team effort everyone (both on the sea and in the pub)!
Cheers
Tom
