Canoe museum holiday destination?

Heneghan Peng has won the international design contest for the new £12.5million Canadian Canoe Museum in Peterborough, Ontario

The practice is set to work with Toronto-based Kearns Mancini on the job to create a new 7,150m² home for the prestigious not-for-profit museum.

Dublin-based Heneghan Peng saw off a shortlist which included Vancouver's Bing Thom Architects, Kohn Pederson Fox, Winnipeg-based 5468796 Architecture, and a team including Provencher_Roy of Montreal and NORR of Toronto.

The firm's design features a 7,400m2 snaking glass pavilion filled with flexible exhibition spaces and topped with a two-acre rooftop park.

The building will house the museum's collection of more than 100 kayaks and canoes which are currently on display inside a 1980s building and former warehouses in an industrial district nearby.

The facility – expected to receive around 60,000 visitors in its first year – will include permanent galleries, an outdoor terrace, a conference venue, restaurant, bar, café and artisan workshops.

The judges said Heneghan Peng's entry was chosen because it 'works organically with the land rather than overwhelming it.'

Richard Tucker, executive director of the Canadian Canoe Museum, said: 'The design looks forward to the importance of sustainability, respect and responsibility as we move forward as a Nation to the Sesquicentennial in 2017, and beyond.

'The design speaks to the importance of the contents, programming and messages conveyed by the Canadian Canoe Museum and its craft to all Canadians.'

He added: 'The Canadian Canoe Museum will immediately start work on the design and submission of a planning application to the City of Peterborough and Parks Canada to approve the new facility as well as laying the ground work for our fund raising campaign.'

The practice will now begin work on a planning submission for the museum.

It'd be cheaper to sneak into the Pyranha shop/Kayaks North West, and try to convince them to give you a tour of Graham Mackereth's personal collection of old/historic boats! He's got a fair collection!
