Hello all,
I've been looking over a pack list that has been given to me and it mentions having a solution to keeping a head torch charged and dry on an upcoming canoe expedition. Keeping it charged is no issue, as I can simply pack spare batteries in a dry bag, but I'm unsure how to keep it dry whilst I'm using it. I think it has a waterproof seal, but was wondering if anyone has any recommendations that can help. I'm very new to canoeing- this is just my 3rd time doing it! Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It's not usually a problem. It's rare to be paddling in the dark, ever rarer to be paddling in the dark and the rain, and I doubt you'd be doing it at this point in your paddling progress. Using a headtorch while paddling is normally more of a nuisance than a benefit. It reflects off your top arm and spoils your night vision.
To use it ashore, position it on your forehead and wear a wide brimmed hat over it. Or just buy one that's IP 68 rated, which will be waterproof enough to stand rain and paddling.

I have a couple of torches that I take out when kayaking at night. One is a USB rechargeable from the builder's merchants, the other an Alpkit Gamma. The gamma will stand up to total immersion. The other, £14, torch seems fine in the rain.
Mostly I only use the torch when getting in/out of the boat, and finding stuff when ashore.
Did used to paddle on the Cam, where lights are required. Red blinky (cheap bike light) on rear of PDF, similar on front.
You really don't want a bright head torch, it just reflects off everything and destroys your night sight.
My 'boat' light is a kayalite. That's really only required because I paddle on sea lochs in winter, and it is good to have something that will make me stand out.
