Re: Import duty and VAT from the US?

Nowadays I contact sellers first and if they use DHL, I politely decline to buy from them and suggest they use a competent carrier... I've had bad experiences with practically every carrier there is, from non-delivery and no card put through the door, to boot prints on the packaging. The latest was...

Re: Beginners questions

I would rather just jump in at the deep end and give it a go than go for lessons etc. I am quite happy jumping in the river so falling in out of a boat isn't going to hurt :D I am older than most of the people here, so it falls to me to say this: it's good to be confident but do think about your sa...

Nookie bikes & Nookie have chatted about any confusion and everyone is happy with each other I find that really surprising - and it's not just the old fusspot in me speaking here. Re: First time to the Alps - Advice needed

I suggested flying for several reasons: 1. I have seen a lot of people turn up in the Alps wrecked from the drive but eager to get on the water. The fatigue and change in white water style has led to many out-of-boat epics on the first day which can potentially ruin your week. Yes. I've known a few...

Re: First time to the Alps - Advice needed

Interesting that the 'professionals' all strongly recommend flying. I guess that comes from years of travelling thousands of miles in the pursuit of white water - the novelty has now well and truly worn off! I'm going to side with the drivers. Driving is part of the adventure, and the convenience of...

A few months ago I was on the canalside path which runs past my house, trying to photograph swallows and house martins in the air with my big white Canon telephoto lens. Trespass on the other hand is a wholly civil matter. The police are not interested. You cannot prosecute for trespass, you may only sue. Since sueing implies that you are seeking damages, I'd wager that in order to sucessfully sue for trespass you'd need to own the land and prove damage to it. Aggr...

Re: Who is in charge / liable on a club river trip?

Are you referring back to my post about the French? In English law a bystander is never obliged to help out in an incident. You can watch somebody have a heart attack, do nothing to help and not even phone for an ambulance. Not a nice thing to do, but perfectly legal. But under French law you could ...

I live right next to a canal. My neighbour used to let his kids play in an open canoe on the canal, with no adult supervision and no buoyancy aids. Not only was that obviously dangerous to any sensible adult, it was even clearer to me as a qualified coach. If one of them had drowned before I found ...

Re: Who is in charge / liable on a club river trip?

If you are looking for a principle, it helps to consider a number of scenarios to see if they fit. Both characters are equally skilled, one says this the other says that, who decides what they do? Maybe all trips need an arbitrator who must be even more highly qualified to decide between competing ...

You cannot 'tacitly agree'. Would you expect a raft trip leader to ask for the CVs of all of his passengers and also to ask them if they were happy with each of his decisions? And would you expect the qualified rafter who has come along for the ride on his day off but is not involved in running the...

My two pennies worth, that may help coaches stay safe; - Why are you giving a young person /vulnerable adult (yp/va) your phone number? To what purpose? - Are you giving it to just one yp/va, and if so are you happy to give it to others? - Where / how do you intend on giving the yp/va for phone num...

The usual method nowadays is to photograph them with a digital SLR fitted with a slide copier.
