Re: ACR Artex PLBs

Thank you Ian. I looked again after your message and the manufacturer's site definitely says they both float both and both have integrated strobes. It looks rather like its a battery life difference and small power output difference on 406MHz that is the only functional difference between the two ty...

ACR Artex PLBs

Does anyone know what the difference is between ACR's two marine PLBs - the ResQlink and Aqualink? Both products come in 2 models. Its easy enough to see what the differences are between the ResQlink and the ResQlink+ and between the Aqualink and Aqualink View. However, with the exception of the wat...

Re: Advice for newbie please!

I did the Intro to Sea Kayaking Course at The National Watersports Centre on Cumbrae umpteen times the summer I started sea kayaking!! I hadn't done any other kind of paddling before that. Doing it multiple times certainly helped to consolidate and embed the basic skills. I also live locally so its ...

Re: Broken Valley Etain Seat

Interesting discussion - the seat in my Nordkapp LV came out and then went back in with absolutely no problems at all. Its the original seat and hasn't been taken out before. Mine also seems to have quite a lot of foam underneath. I've gotten rid of the backrest altogether and now just have blocks o...

Re: Inflatable Kayak for Sea

There is another option to consider which is a regular composite kayak which breaks down into 3 sectional parts - each section is formed at the point where the normal bulkheads sit inside the kayak. You can get any of the Valley kayak range built in 3 sections which then just all clamp together with...

Re: Newbie wants to repair & modify a Kayak...

I'm sure that there will be others who have far greater technical and construction knowledge than I do but you need to be incredibly careful that the kayak you think you can fit into doesn't become an instant death-trap when you try it out. You need to be absolutely 100% certain before you go anywhe...

Re: Waterproof jacket

If price is a key issue for you then perhaps you could have a look on the Lomo website and see if they have something that suits your requirements. It won't be fancy, you can't expect it to last forever but it should provide a basic, functional item at a low price to get you going. Another option if...

Hi I'm very close to you geographically but I am not experienced enough to offer you any advice on a suitable sea kayak and I'm afraid I don't have one to sell - I've only fairly recently bought mine and I'm keen on keeping it! It might be helpful for people reading your post if you can expand a bit...

Re: Roof bars for a camper.

Its not just a matter of finding a way to fix the roof bars/rack on a van conversion where the roof integrity has been affected by the insertion of a pop up roof. You need to find out what the new maximum load carrying capacity of the van roof is. Often when these VW transporter vans are converted a...

Just be careful that you don't invalidate the remaining Kokatat warranty by trying to do repairs on your own or sending the suit away to someone just because its cheaper in the short term. Many Kokatat suits carry lengthy, comprehensive warranties - that's partly what you are paying a premium for. I...

Re: Quest LV weight : carbon v composite

Hi Phil - the concept of 'flex' is all relative of course and I'm sure you are right that as materials evolve and manufacturers change/update the construction of their boats, the 'feel' will also change. I was only commenting in general terms about the typical differences one would expect from boats...

I've got 2 Werner paddles. Both are new, 2-piece carbon fibre paddles - one was a special order and the other was off the shelf. Neither of them has any movement at all in the joint - they are completely solid. I've used other 2 piece Werner paddles (which had all seen a bit more action than mine) a...

Re: Quest LV weight : carbon v composite

Its worth just remembering that weight isn't the only consideration when considering the different materials used for constructing a kayak. If you were to take the same boat manufactured in 'plastic', glass-fibre and carbon/kevlar each model would perform quite differently by virtue of the different...

Good to know the Decathlon pop-up tents are roomy and go down again reasonably easily. Like I said before, I think their tents are great value for money all things considered. I guess there's a reason its the biggest sports retailer in Europe!

Re: Car camping

I've never tried a pop up tent so I can't comment on whether they constitute 'proper tents' or are sufficiently sturdy. I have seen feedback that they are rather more difficult to pop 'back down' into the bag that they spring out of! Decathlon have a big range of pop-up tents at very inexpensive pri...

Its not just the rotting potential for expensive gear that makes it worthwhile drying it out after every soaking. Its the horrendous, 'worse than wet dog' stink that it all acquires if you leave it festering away!!!

Hi "independent guy"!! Do you actually manufacture the bags yourself? I ask because I'm interested in trying to get some dry bags made to hold mobility titbit they would be a non-standard size/shape - not complicated though. Most places seem to get them manufactured in places like China and buy them...
