Re: T-rescue

Have you tried it holding on to the side of the pool? You can control how far you go over each time and work up to doing a full capsize. This way you can do it in stages and build your confidence while you get the feel of the movement.

Re: Calling Solent

I sent a link to this thread to Garry Hall, a Watch Officer at Solent MRCC who I met on a visit in the summer, to see if he wanted to add anything. He asked me to post this: As a watch officer of 7 years experience what I have read is truly surprising. We at Solent MRCC do man the busiest station in...

Re: Emergency Flares, what to buy and where.

HM Coastguard are currently wary of laser flares I was told only this week by one of their media team, who are running a 'don't point lasers at aircraft' campaign. We didn't use the laser anywhere near the chopper. A rescue laser is nothing like a laser pointer as it has a much more dispersed beam....

Re: Emergency Flares, what to buy and where.

There has been a lot of talk about laser flares on RIBnet over the last few months, and some people have started to carry them. http://www.rib.net/forum/f8/flares-52703.html The general consensus seems to be that they are good as a secondary means of attracting attention, for instance guiding in a l...

Re: Narrow paddle grip

Those paddlers with the narrower grip tend to have less torso rotation, and as such move their arms more to compensate, the paddling phenomena of "tall man disease", often accompanied with shorter paddles to extend the lack of core body strength. What's the "tall man disease"? Curious because I'm t...

Re: Sea kyaking Club or Courses?

I'm in a similar situation, a little further ahead but not much. I'd say do both if you can. An intensive course with good coaching will teach you the basics and get you to a reasonable standard quickly. Club paddles will allow you to consolidate that and build experience, as well as getting some mo...

Wanted: Werner Sherpa 200cm

I've just got my first kayak, and need a paddle. The advice here generally seems to be avoid the cheapest ones, so I thought I'd try for something second hand.

I'm looking for a Werner Sherpa or similar, right handed 200cm.

Thanks!

Calling Solent

Solent CG is a bit different to other areas simply due to the volume of traffic, and in my experience filing passage plans is much less common than in quieter areas. They probably get more than their fair share of ill-prepared idiots though, which may make them over defensive. Having said that, I do...

Drysuit for the excessively lanky?

I'm 6'6" tall and in need of a drysuit. From the size charts Palm doesn't look promising, but Typhoon seems to be a candidate (what's the difference between the MS3 and MS4 btw?).

Any other makes I should be looking at?

Thanks! Working my way through the links now :)

So general opinion seems to be that self adhesive is OK, but proper glue is better?

I'd be really interested to learn more about this too. For instance does the self adhesive foam actually stay stuck? Or does it need gluing properly?

Wanted: Drysuit teenager

I'd like to get a drysuit for my son. He's 5'5" (165cm) tall, but growing so fast I really don't want to buy new. Something well used would be fine, provided it's got a bit of life left in it, but this time next year he'll have grown out of it anyway! Anyone got anything gathering dust that they'd l...

Re: Wanted: Dagger Axiom 8.0

I'm pretty new to kayaks, so I don't know how much of an issue that dent is (or isn't!). Does it affect the way the boat performs at all? Or is it purely cosmetic?

I am a bit put off by it, but open to being persuaded if it's not a big deal.

Wanted: Dagger Axiom 8.0

I'm looking for a Dagger Axiom 8.0 as a first kayak for my 11 year old son. Doesn't need to be shiny, but nothing too trashed please!

Ideally somewhere in the southeast, or would consider having it couriered from further afield.

Re: FOR SALE - Dagger GT 7.8 River Series Spec

Thanks for getting back to me. I'm in Sussex, so a bit of a haul although not the end of the world.

I think it may be academic though as the boat is for my son and I think he's decided to try to find an Axiom anyway. If that changes I may get back to you!
