Re: Recommendations for a thin hood / skull cap ?

I like the Lomo skull cap. Fleece lined with a soft shell outer.
Yes it lets the water and then out again but it's warm even when wet and windproof. And cheap as chips. I've got 5 or 6 now keep them in all my boats and in my car etc.

Re: 4* out. 'Paddlesport leader' in.

My understanding is Paddlesport Leader is a new award below that of 4* and is aimed at 3* paddlers to enable them to lead groups primarily in the club environment and in sheltered waters. 4* is now Sea Kayak Leader but the syllabus and assessment hasn't changed, similarly 5* is now Advanced Sea Kaya...

Re: Boats for "Easyish" Charity Challenges

Thanks for the input guys.

I've managed to pick up 3 brand new cosmetic seconds Stratos and another only a year old and got change from £2k so very happy. Negotiating over two more.

Re: Boats for "Easyish" Charity Challenges

Thanks Irish Sea, I did think about both those boats (my first boat was an Easky 15) but they are considerably more expensive than what we can get the Stratos for. I read the post mentioned and noted the "tracking problem" was in the L version paddling across the harbour, so presumably with no load,...

Boats for "Easyish" Charity Challenges

Hi All, I'm the volunteer safety team leader for Meningitis Now and lead all their mountain challenges. Also as a sea kayaker they have now asked me if I could suggest and lead a kayaking challenging. Bearing in mind most participants will likely be novices whom I will have either never paddled with...

I'd be up for that Pete. I don't feel like I get much for my membership other than access to insurance and an occasional magazine I have absolutely no interest in.

Hi Sue,

Hope you're getting on ok with the Gemini.
Wish you told me when you were here - I had a lightly used plastic Gemini SP as well, weight difference is negligible.

I have a 3 year old Skim Braveheart which is the same as a Tiderace Xcite but shorter in the prow (above the waterline) otherwise exactly the same boat and made by the same Finnish company that used to make Tiderace before they moved production to the Far East. Re: Kayak camping on a budget?

I weighed my tent and it came in at 2.7kgs all in. Yes it is free standing. The ground sheet is quite heavy duty and should be good on pebble or shingle beaches. I have tied 8 inch loops with 2mm cord to all pegging points so I can use rocks where pegs won't work and changed the pegs for the Y shape...

Re: Kayak camping on a budget?

Tentwise I took a chance on one of these and was so impressed when it arrived I promptly bought another. Cost me £48 but they're £55 now. I'm taking it on a kayaking trip to Greenland in the summer. http://www.gearbest.com/tent/pp_326670.html As well as a sea kayaker I'm also a mountaineer and would...

Re: Kayak Volume

Take along a few drybags of known volume. Fill each compartment with water then empty (or pump) it into the dry bags and you have a relatively accurate volume for each one.
At the very least it will give you a good comparison.

Yamba at Preston have a new North Shore Ocean 17.6 advertised on ebay (they also have a website) for £1700. It's been listed for a while so they may be open to offers as well. This would be a brand new boat for second hand money if it suits you. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/North-Shore-Ocean-17-6-Sea-K...
