Arctic Lofoten Islands

Jann Engstad and Olly Sanders have made a successful crossing out to the remote island of Rost in the southern chain of the Arctic Lofoten Islands. This was completed over 3 days and included a crossing of the This infamous (apparently!) Moskenstraumen or Maelstrom out to the Island of Vaeroy. Jann ...

It all looks good to me, an impressive new record for Brendan. If you are going to do these sort of things then you might as well do them properly ie take the best part of two hours off! http://www.performanceseakayak.co.uk/Pages/Circumnav.html http://www.performanceseakayak.co.uk/Pages/Gossip.html ...

Re: Isle of Wight Circumnavigation

That is an impressive time from Brendan. Record time? Well it is significantly faster then John Aberdein's K1 time, set back in 1980. http://www.performanceseakayak.co.uk/Pages/Circumnav.html It's even faster than the more recent time set by Ivan Lawler, Chloe Bunnett and Peter Molnar (on skis!). I ...

I expect if she hadn't beaten Pascale's time she'd still be there now waiting for each turn of the tide! Possibly... I do like a competitive spirit! Can't have a go now... might be too embarassing. Feeling a little old are we? Besides, it's not all about winning John, it's about the taking part. JW

Re: Which compass?

I've used the Silva 58 in the past but found it a little difficult to read at a distance. I settled for the Orca a few years back and have used it for a number of crossings. It's a bit cheap and cheerful but has done the job well. The only problem I found is the moulding at the base of lubber line a...

Re: Anybody know where I can buy one of these?

John I use one of these as a 'coverall' for early morning starts over a t-shirt cag or for an additional layer as required. XL fits over BA too, but is obviously a little long. http://www.peakuk.com/peakukkit.php?content=jacket&prodid=117 I chose it for the full length zip, I don't need to lift it o...

North Reef Expedition

A little far from home for most of us but it looks intriguing all the same: Rob Mercer, Mark Sundin & Chris James are building up to their North Reef Expedition, paddling an island chain off the Queensland coast with an aim to be the first to paddle to the North Reef lighthouse. http://northreefexpe...

Re: Wish us Luck?

Yes, the best of luck. Get into a routine and try to stick with it, it helps in later stages when fatigue starts to play a part. Many try something like 55mins on 5 off, with a drink on the 1/2 hr mark, it's only a suggestion though - you need to decide what suits you. Keep an eye on your position a...
