Re: K1 Club South Wales

Hi Lee, we have a club in Abergavenny, with a lot of members from Ebbw Vale and Tredegar. We meet summer evenings outside, canal, Keeper's Pond etc. In the winter pool session in King Henry, Abergavenny. Plus river trips as often as we can. We don't k1 at the moment but we are only just into our 3rd...

Adrian thanks for that link. My understanding is that they are changing more than the name of the award. I have been told they are changing the structure of the award again.

Change to four star

I have been told that the four star is being changed again. Does anyone know how, why, and by whom? The current 4 star with leadership in it seemed to work really well (would prefer a more modular canoe 4 star as trying to fit in open water and all the trad stuff is tricky). Any one know more detail...

I don't know the paddler involved in the Dee stuff. However if they needed funds for legal representation could we crowd source it?
I would put my hand in my pocket and cough up money.

Re: trespass insurance

Canoe Wales said their understanding of the cover is legal fees. So you get sued for trespass ( the remedy for a breach of a tort in civil law) CW insurance will pay your legal bill.
The details are to be confirmed however.

Re: What shoes for kayaking?

I use Keen river shoes, best kayak foot wear I have had and they have lasted. If I saw another pair I would not hesitate to buy them but don't know if Keen do river / canyon shoes any more.

trespass insurance

Just been to a CW road show. This sort of ties in with the thread on membership price.
CW from 1st November 2016 have new insurers. We are now insured if we are sued for trespass.
Asked CW and no one yet knows the details.

pool sessions

Our club pay nearly £70 for a 1 hour pool session. We currently charge £3 for under 16 and £5 for over 16 yr old. Most sessions we lose money so the club subsidises each pool session. Part of our fund raising is to enable us to do this. Our AGM is soon, and we are going to ask the members to put the...

Me personally, I paddle when and where I want. As I live near the Usk, I have the luxury of not getting on when it is scrapey. However if we ran a club trip a long way away? I now have zero tolerance to threats and abuse. Every time I ring the police. A colleague at work called the police this summe...

Hydro scheme on the Monnow. Archimedes screw, paddled past it a few times, causes no problem to navigation.
Don't remember being consulted though! It is constructed off an existing massive weir that used to power a water mill.

I insure my boats with my house insurance. Been doing it for a while. At the time they were the only one I could find to insure small water craft.
They are insured old for new. Not done the maths recently to see if it is worth it, kayaks maybe easy to replace, but my royalex canoe?

Pay for parking. I guess the hand ferry ramp is a public right of way to the river, launch there for free?

Re: Symonds Yat, am I being tight?

They issue blank cards, club secretary fills them out on payment of subs, costs CW virtually nothing. Easy! Awkward to car share as in the evening we are all rushing from different places after work (lame excuse)! For some of the under 10's that little extra paddle when they are starting out could b...

In England affiliated members don't get cards?

Ok, ok, ok ok. One thing, I didn't mean an agreement for just my club, all affiliated clubs. Symonds Yat, am I being tight?

I help run and coach a new, small club in Wales. We are lucky enough to be able to run evening coaching sessions at the Yat. On the Allier really good, child friendly campsite in Langeac. Rafting restrictions seem to be lifted /ignored as local companies raft. You can do Calais to Langeac in 10 hours.

In England and Wales no one owns the water in a river. There is a House of Lords ruling about ownership of air space above your land. You can not own air space above your land. I think it talked about floating on water in the same judgment. Floating on water in a river regardless of the right to nav...

Wow, first I have seen of this, interesting that the BMC is driving a response from the start and as usual nothing from BC.
We use a NT hill regularly at work, filling out paper work just to go for a walk seems so wrong. If every land owner did this could be a nightmare.

Glissades (canoe/kayak shoots) are every where in Europe. Some of them are huge, I can think of some great ones down stream of Lourdes. Some are even hydraulically opened. Hi Steve, I live near the Usk. My friends and I ignore the WUF levels for the Summer as they have no relevance to wildlife protection, they are an arbitrary level to keep boaters off the river. The purpose of this is to give salmon fishermen sole use of the river. We paddle responsibly, where we wan...
