Hypothetically

Helped out at a charity event today. Spoke to a major land owner and some one in charge of the salmon fishing on one of the major big rivers in South Wales. He said he is keen to increase access on the section of river he controls, has influence over. Me personally I already paddle these sections wh...

Re: Spikes on the Usk

Near the village of Llanspyddid. They have put walking planks a quarter of the way out into the river. Potentially really nasty.
Canoe Wales environment/access officer is chasing it with Natural Resources Wales.

Hazards put in the Usk

Abergavenny Canoe Club ran Aberbran to Brecon on the Usk on Sunday. Nice level and a successful trip. Before we got on the farmer at Aberbran had a chat. He was very friendly and I asked permission to cross his field and he was fine with it. We saw 2 fishermen and passed them with no hassles. Just b...

Re: Vehicle for boats and bikes

Mondeo estate. Two canoes or 4 kayaks on roof. Thule tow bar mounted bike carrier, takes 2 bikes (you can buy a 4 bike version).
Driven to France several times with canoe and 2 kayaks on roof, 2 mountain bikes on rack. Camping kit inside.

Re: British Canoeing AGM

Chris are you after specific things to back up our argument for PRN? Examples are; the Monnow at Skenfrith there is a medieval dock, this proves that the river was used for navigation for hundreds of years. Alfred Russell Wallace wrote in his autobiography that as a child he watched coracles being u...

Check out the NRW gauge at Llandetty on the Usk. The Mill Falls section will go above 0.7. There is always surf and CIWW.

Re: rain at last

Nice one Mal. Ran the lower Grwyne on Saturday after some serious faff. Some one who shall remain nameless, but lives 200m from the get out was lazing in bed, then after the run both possible shuttle return drivers had left their keys in the upstream car!!!! Had to ring nameless person's partner to ...

Can I remember what kayaking is? So long since we have had rain!

Re: Hypothetically.... river bed alterations!

Talk to a caver, diggers use Dr Noble! Or do what fishermen do and get a JCB up there. I have seen them altering the bed of the Wye with a JCB in the river (make a bet they did not have permission from any authority as the Wye is a SSSI).

Simon if you know the locals' sneak you can run this in a summer evening.
If you check NRW river gauge at Llandetty the minimum for a kayak run 0.70, minimum for a canoe run 0.75. I want to leave some Royalex on my boat! Running it in massive water in a trad boat is a good test and great fun.

Re: River Tamar - Horsebridge to Gunnislake

My understanding of riparian ownership is the landowner owns the river bed halfway across if they own 1 bank. No one owns water in a river. Bobforfish please don't be worried by responsible canoeists/kayakers. Several years ago the Environment Agency funded a report on paddle sport and fishing/fish ...

warning Brecon Promenade

Some friends paddled the Usk on Friday. Some one who shall remain nameless read the parking ticket machine, but got it wrong about free parking. At the end of the day 3 of them got £25 parking fines. They went to pay and just made a mistake. Never known the car park at the promenade to be checked, e...

Got on the Usk today. Bit low but glad to be out! Thought about edging, keeping the hull flat. Wow, really hard to break the muscle memory. Hi Beth, once you've spent a winter in a dry suit you never go back! Try on your mates if you can. Go to a shop with a variety to try on if possible. My first drysuit money was tight and I bought the cheapest one I could find which turned out ok. Some are definitely better than others. Talk to peopl...

next boat after dynamo.

Help needed! Got a young girl in the club and she is getting too big for her dagger dynamo. Too small for an adult boat. I was thinking the smallest Innazone would be a cheap option.
Any one got any opinions on a cheap small ww boat?
Thanks Jason.

Swimming. On a lovely Summer's day ditch the boat, get every one swimming. Make it fun, removes anxiety about swimming and teaches first hand about eddys etc. Obviously doesn't work in winter and not everyone's cup of tea!

Does that mean the current star awards and coaching pathways are not fit for our purpose? Our purpose being differ...

Hi Lee, we have a club in Abergavenny, with a lot of members from Ebbw Vale and Tredegar. We don't k1 at the moment but we are only just into our 3rd...

Change to four star

I have been told that the four star is being changed again. Does anyone know how, why, and by whom? The current 4 star with leadership in it seemed to work really well (would prefer a more modular canoe 4 star as trying to fit in open water and all the trad stuff is tricky). Any one know more detail...

Canoe Wales said their understanding of the cover is legal fees. So you get sued for trespass ( the remedy for a breach of a tort in civil law) CW insurance will pay your legal bill.
The details are to be confirmed however.

I use Keen river shoes, best kayak foot wear I have had and they have lasted. If I saw another pair I would not hesitate to buy them but don't know if Keen do river / canyon shoes any more.
