Re: Carrying flares

The usual recommendation for a rocket flare is to fire on your down wind side with the flare pointed slightly down wind so that the exhaust is not blown into your face as it would be if it is upwind of you. I failed to properly check the contents of my post - Thanks to Ken for pointing this out! I ...

Re: Carrying flares

Hi All Just a thought regarding para/rocket flares. It could be your best hope if you've been forced to land (medical/capsized/broken kayak) on a remote beach/gully surrounded by high cliffs. You're in a deep hole. A PLB/VHF or mobile phone may not get a signal out in this situation. They all need "...

Freya Hoffmeister - seriously generous and Thinking Bigger!

I went to listen to Freya Hoffmeister at Weymouth Sailing Academy on Friday evening. Interesting presentation and she is indeed remarkable. However, what she did at the end of the evening deserves the highest recognition - she donated her full profits of the evening event to the RNLI. This was more ...

i suspect that the compass recess isnt deep enough and is causing the expansion membrane to be compressed Simon, you're right on the money with your analysis. Re: Tiderace Moving Bulkhead ?

I'm always surprised that a lot of manufacturers don't offer a choice of bulkhead positions when the boats are being built as, for only a little extra work at that point, it can make a huge difference to a boats usability for kit carrying. Of course you should be able to choose the front bulkhead p...

PM sent.

Also, always worth checking in with the specialist dealers www.britishseakayaks.co.uk in Plymouth, sseak.co.uk in Dorset and karitek.co.uk in Scotland as we sometimes accept trade-ins. As far as I am aware, no official UK dealers sell "factory rejects".

Re: Rockpool Taran 18

It is one of a matched pair, originally purchased to set up a sea racing challenge project for paddlers with disabilities.. I'll accept a sensible offer close to the full retail price. 30% off the RRP is not a sensible offer. In fact it's a little bit cheeky, given that I've put my own money into a...

Despite my shy, retiring nature it's exactly what I'm looking for. Unfortunately my head is just a little smaller than yours, possibly due to brain removal in a former career.

Seriously, I really would have snapped it up if the size was right. Great hat.

Re: British Kayak manufacturers and customer service

Hi Psamathe I agree with the comments about how helpful manufacturers are. Particularly the case as in contrast I've found retailers a total waste of time. When selecting my (new) kayak I'd call retailers with questions and I got more accurate info from the manufacturer web site - and when a retaile...

Sounds like you may have learnt the hard way.
Luckily not me but I recently heard of someone who did. Just trying to spread the word and save it happening to someone else really. It's what some of us nice retailers do.

Re: Why bent gate carabineers on tow ropes?

I would think attempting to clip a fixed line with one hand and 2 boats moving independantly in a swell would be a good enough reason to want the slightly extra ease of clipping you get from a bent gate. I agree. Make life easier for yourself. There's usually plenty of action going on when towlines...

NDK/Sea Kayaking UK seats and back bands

Hi Everyone If you have a Romany, Explorer, Pilgrim or any sea kayak from the Sea Kayaking UK range built since 2009 this is for you. It's relating to seat brackets and removal of back bands. This doesn't apply to pre-2009 seats that are attached to the cockpit rim. Some of you may decide you don't ...

Re: First Composite Boat Help

Hi Spence Some high volume sea kayaks are seriously massive and you might find them just too big unless fully loaded. The Rockpool GT is a great boat but the cockpit is not overly generous and the seat can be a bit narrow for some. The Rockpool Menai18 might be an alternative. It's very, very big bu...

Re: Map Case recommondations?

Axel's map case is excellent and durable. I've used one since 2010 without problem. Also very good is the one from Whetman Equipment. It's had a full year's use by me and doesn't leak, despite numerous consecutive days of full immersion and little maintenance. It's closure system is very simple and ...

Training options not mentioned so far are: Lizard Adventure, run by J-P and Annette Eatock. They have a good team of people and J-P is one of the top sea kayaking coaches in the UK. They have good sea kayaks in their fleet. He's also a Hayle club member (lives in Hayle) and knows the area very well....

Re: Am I too light for a Rockppol Taran?

Hi Sean As far as weight/height is concerned, you will be okay in a Taran16, Tarantella or full-size Taran(18). Shoe size is the limiting factor in a Tarantella - bigger than a UK8 gets a bit tight. Rudder - as others have said, these kayaks are primarily designed to be used with a rudder but Mike W...

Re: Standard Horizon HX300 tether/lanyard

You'll need to insulate carefully, or you risk messing with the antenna tuning. Plus you increase the risk of water ingress into the radio through the coaxial connector. And the extra weight - Nick wouldn't approve!

Re: Standard Horizon HX300 tether/lanyard

Hi Chris Like you, the bulkiness of the clip annoyed me and I had to sort it out. I removed the pin that passes through the belt clip/spring/mount, which left me the bit that locks into the radio body. As it already has the holes that the pin passed through, it's ready to receive the original tether...

Hi Chris First of all I'll declare my interest as a dealer for NDK/Sea Kayaking UK. However, I have been paddling the Latitude quite a bit now (4 months) so I'll try to add some meat to the marketing bones while avoiding a "commercial". The keyhole cockpit is really long (36") and narrow, which mean...
