Re: Sea Kayaking - Scotland

I would always try one of the companies local to the area you want to visit as they have the knowledge to make the most of the area whatever the weather and conditions.

I would expect you to be a good fit as I wear size 11 and am 14 stone and 6ft and easily have lots to spare. I would really recommend you paddle it not just sit in it before you buy. I love it.

Re: FREE Sea Kayak Demo Day, Sunday 16th March, Cumbria

Cathy & I really enjoyed it and it was good to see so many people and it was possibly the first time that all 23 different sea kayaks were demoed. Though I must confess paddling back to our island home in the wind and rain and 10.30pm was hard work but today the sun is shining and the flowers out an...

Re: Adjusting seat position to accommodate big feet

The Typhoon boots I use are the surfmaster but I'm sure there are others that would work as well. These also have a hard sheet inside the sole so you dont feel sharp rocks etc.

Re: Adjusting seat position to accommodate big feet

I also have a pair of lomo boots and they are great in very roomy boats but for boats with lower decks I have bought a pair of Typhoon boots that have more rounded heels and also they are wider so that I can take a smaller size . This means I can now manage to fit my feet in the lower decked boats. ...

Re: Rockpool Taran (full size) vs Tiderace Pace 17

There are 2 others that are similar, the Epic 18 and the Zegul Velocity. There are plenty of Epic 18's around and the new style rudder works really well. The cockpit is plenty big enough. The Zegul Velocity I have only tried on flat water but it was well made and the new distributor is close to you....

Re: Broughton Archipelago (British Columbia) pointers?

Spent the summer of '84 sea kayaking there and it was one of the best ever. I am sure its changed lots but still a wonderful place. The water is always cold, there were very few mosquitos. There were quite a few eccentrics to chat to. I was based out of Echo Bay when in the islands and Port MacNeil ...

Re: Sea kayak with upturned stern or not

Usually with a sea kayak one of the key choices is getting a kayak that is the right size . However no one has mentioned this as an issue . I Do know some quite small people that have Tarans and some that are far less small yet both seem to get on with them. Any explanation? I note that in surf skis...

Re: WS Tempest 170

the composite Tempests are now made at tahe in Estonia if that's of interest. We have used tempests lots in our kayak school and I haven't found their skegs kink anymore than any others and less than some, as they don't come down as far. Other alternatives would be the Etain 17.5 rm and the Northsho...

it's worth noting that the Zegul Greenland has changed quite a bit this Autumn in the cockpit area so has a lot more room and I understand that even this month the deck layout has changed again ie position of the decklines. however the Greenland T seems to have remained the same. You are welcome to ...

Re: downriver kayak for sea use

Yes its so much faster.
You could ask Marsport http://www.marsport.co.uk/ in the Reading area about fitting an understern rudder. They do this on Marathon boats. An over stern rudder will be too close to the end and spend quite a bit of time out of the water.

Re: downriver kayak for sea use

I have used a river racer extensively for sea kayaking but it only works well when its not windy. When the wind gets up its just like any sea kayak without a functioning skeg but worse. Andy Moreton has had a 9kg river racer built with an understern rudder and finds this works really well and is eas...

Re: SCA?

I would suggest that the fastest way to progress is to go on a course while at the same time joining several clubs in areas where you would like to paddle so for example for you in Mid Argyll you could join Oban club and Mallaig club which are both fairly active.

Re: P&H Cetus Owners/Users

The use of boats by centres where lots of beginners, who dont always remember that their skeg is down or to bring it up, are taken out by many different instructors is very different to one person and their kayak. I much prefer a fairly rigid wire & skeg & control where I can tell exactly how far up...

Ever since the Arduaine campsite disappeared there havent been any such facilities between Oban and Lochgilphead. The guys Mu...

Re: Kokatat GMER Drysuit vs. Reed Aquatherm Paddlesuit

There are a lot of alternatives from Kokatat. Some are very light inc the Goretex light weight paddling suit. Their other material (hydrus) is also breathable and waterproof and considerably more affordable, for example http://shop.shopseakayakoban.com/epages/es146065.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/es1...
