Re: Surf ski seating adjustment

Aah, sorry I misunderstood. Padding the rear and base of the seat sounds like the way forward but obviously any increase to the seat height will significantly alter your centre of gravity and therefore stability so, personally, Id be inclined to start with fabricating the back rest. Ive used closed-...

Re: Surf ski seating adjustment

Im sure this was discussed previously so worth a search, altho that might have been on the Surfski Scotland Facebook page so may be worth looking there also. Assuming the foot track cannot be moved closer, which would of course mean drilling new holes, my gut feeling would be blocks of rigid closed-...

Re: Register your EPIRB

with it being able to be unwound + rewound by the user Not knowing which PLB model you have, is that in reference to the Ocean Signal RescueMe? The aerial on the McMurdo Fastfind unwinds when you remove the sealed cap, but that's a one-off. Once unsealed and unwound it would need to be returned for...

Re: Register your EPIRB

That's good to know re customer service as one of my big concerns when buying was whether the aerial might be susceptible to damage with it being able to be unwound + rewound by the user. The suggestion re attaching to boat in order to keep aerial upright is an interesting one as it assumes your boa...

Re: Register your EPIRB

A sobering read Rod, thank you. Indeed, and as you say, no way any of us should be considering a PLB as our 'Get of jail free' card. Like others above, I have been waiting over 5 months on confirmation of my PLB registration but it does make me wonder if NOT having anyone to contact might actually ...

Re: Carrying flares

Having read this and a similar conversation on the SSKEG FB page I'm now seriously considering NOT replacing my out of date parachute flares. Like others I carry VHF and PLB so I'm increasingly of the opinion that the added value a Para flare adds is not sufficient to outweigh the risk of it not fir...

Re: Carrying flares

Yep, I feel flares still have their place (in addition to VHF and / or PLB) despite the cost v lifespan v likeliness to actually work when you need them.
I also believe that rescuers find them very useful when closing-in on the casualty, particularly for gauging wind direction for helicopters.

Re: Tiderace Moving Bulkhead ?

Thanks for the comments. I'm simply wanting to maximise storage space to make the boat more suited to longer trips so if I decide to go ahead with the move then its on the basis that the boat is for me, that I intend to keep it for a number of years and I will accept any loss of resale value further...

Re: Tiderace Moving Bulkhead ?

Fantastic, thanks for the reply Aled. If the current bulkhead has a 'biscuit-tin' lip on it, I'm guessing it would be a lot easier to cut the vertical face of the bulkhead and leave the lip on place so as to avoid any risk of cutting / sanding into the hull laminate itself. Sanding smooth and possib...

Tiderace Moving Bulkhead ?

Has anyone moved the forward bulkhead on a Tiderace boat and able to offer any advice please ? I have maybe 6" between my footrests and bulkhead so want to move it towards the seat by roughly this amount and just put foam pads as foot rests. There appears to be a black sealant (similar to Sikaflex) ...

Re: Anyone know of sea kayaks in Morocco?

I cant help with an answer but watching as I'm hoping to be out there for a trip later in the year.

Have you tried contacting any of the surf centres as I would think they would know if there was someone renting sea kayaks, you might struggle to get any flat touring conditions though.

Re: car keys

For those using Aquapacs, are you just keeping these in a BA pocket ? I don't have any pockets in my surf BA so anything I carry has to go down my wetsuit and I found even the smallest the Aquapac to be too big and uncomfortable to bare, with the rigid closing mechanism digging in. I agree with othe...

Re: Werner paddle button jamming

If trying the insulating tape approach, it would probably be worth putting a wrap around the join as well as the button itself. You may find the tape over the button stretches enough to leave it in place and still operate the button. On my old-style proud button I made a chamfered shim to make it a ...

Re: Tendinitis - advice?

I went through a spell of fairly bad 'tennis elbow' after a period of kayak surfing and a LOT of rolling without any prior conditioning. The usual exercises and physio weren't having much effect and I had an event coming up so needed a quick fix. The one thing that really made a difference fairly qu...

Re: Werner paddle button jamming

Just a thought - if the button works perfectly when at home and only jams once used it rather suggests that a tiny amount of dirt may be getting in to the button. You could try taping over it with something like insulating tape and see if that prevents the problem. OK, so the whole point of having a...

Re: car keys

I use a 'dumb' key on a string around my neck which will only open the door and has no transponder so is not susceptible to water. In my case, lock vehicle with remote, open door with dumb key, put remote etc back inside car, lock with key only. (this may depend on vehicle though). The downside of t...

Re: Can you use a sit on top kayak in the ocean?

The vast majority of kayak fishermen tend to use SoTs due to their added stability and that they are often paddling shorter distances.
If you have any specific questions about SoTs in general or that model and its suitability you may want to try post in the Kayak Angling pages.

Re: Waveski sizing advice

If its a 'glass ski and was not expensive in the first place, its perfectly possible to extend the foot recesses further back and fit additional screw inserts. Then either fill the front part of the heel recess with close-cell foam or fit a foot support between strap inserts. All of which is a fair ...
