Re: Is play boating a kids game?

Since I broke my ankle I find my playboat more comfortable than my big boat. I point my feet in my Jackon Superstar where as I do the opposite in My Zet Director. Shame I am next to useless in a playboat!!

Re: Angling Trust - More Saber rattling, or serious this tim

There has been some exchanges recently on the River Lune, particularly the Halton rapids section. Some examples "This morning my Sister and I went down to Halton to do a bit of paddling at the rapids. I was parked in the ‘Canoe England Permit’ car park, and was displaying my BCU permit. While gearin...

Re: The Etive spanking a paddler at monstrous flows!!!

Just watched it from the start, forgot about some of the quality lines and techniques in there!!! haha My only defence is that this was before the gopro era so I hadnt had the luxury of learning lines and techniques by watching better paddlers online. Which besides coaching has been one of the main ...

Re: The Etive spanking a paddler at monstrous flows!!!

Obviously I am saying it all tongue in cheek. Here is a vid with me in it messing up the same drop back in the day when I was pretty clueless. From 2:11 Click I am in the Orange Superstar (before I knew better!!). I didnt swim and ended up in the same place as the guy before and then climbed out of ...

Re: The Etive spanking a paddler at monstrous flows!!!

I am however pretty pi$$ed off that the original poster wasn’t even part of the group in the video, made worse by the annoying sarcasm about the river level….completely clueless that this is actually the hardest level (apart from huge) to run this rapid. Any higher, you get good bite off the right ...

Re: Dealing with loss of ability and drive

Best Quote- 'best paddler on the water is the one with the biggest smile on their face :) ' If kayaking still makes you smile, go and do it. But before jumping on the big stuff, I'd give a go at having just a good day on the river with your friends. Go to the treweryn or the washburn or something i...

Re: The Etive spanking a paddler at monstrous flows!!!

I have messed up there when I was learning also. Also with not much river experience. I didn't swim but got worked towards the boulders on the right. I ended up climbing out my boat from there.

I posted the vid as I thought it was worthy of going viral!

From what I have seen of your posts. U r a hard core paddler. I am at the other end of the scale. Iam a shit paddler. And get a little bit less shit each time I go out. - 55yrs old. Started paddling for the kids. They didn't want to paddle and I carried on. I share ur fear. If I stop paddling even ...

Thanks for the replies. Some quick answers. I am 34 and the potential child will hopefully be here within 18 months. I am smashing the physio exercises and have booked an appointment with a non NHS physio for next week. I know the healing time is a year plus and I have to be patient. As for why I pa...

Dealing with loss of ability and drive

Some of you may be aware that I broke my ankle in Chile back in January. Since then I have been in a boat on flat water a handful of times. Each time I struggle to walk the next day. I am still in the healing process but out of cast and walking of sorts. I have seen my friends go off on their Europe...

Re: Sue's Canoes, what gives?

Small shops don't hold much stock. However, they show stock on websites so as to be able to take the order. They hope they get enough orders in say a week to make the postage from the supplier not completely wipe away their margins. This I imagine is what happened with the DVD situation. Some shops ...

Re: modern technology and kayaking

The biggest thing I have noticed is the invention of the GoPro and social media. For example Norway 10 years ago was seen as a destination for the hardcore skilled boaters. Now every man and his dog appears to go, and they are paddling stuff that appeared in Valhalla and orgasmo vids (think thats th...

Re: How to teach Low Brace & Low Brace Turn?

Oh, for the love of… Modern paddling technique my arse. It's whatever works for you and gets you down the river safely. Assuming we are talking WW here, it's such a dynamic environment and it's so easy to find yourself in unexpected positions that it's what is 'right' at the time. Learning too much...

Re: Flat hull with edges vs displacement hull, with some edg

Of course the above is all generalization, you don't need an edge to carve as can be proven by people carving a great many round bilge creek boats and canoes . Oh yes, apart from the decked type, canoes aren't able to make use of deck edges either. Some have chines and a bit of tumblehome can add s...

Re: How to teach Low Brace & Low Brace Turn?

Several points here, some based on the Simon Westgarth quotes linked above: - There are still situations in which a low brace turn can be useful, but they are certainly not the most used technique any more (were they ever?) - I agree with Simons comments about change of effectiveness in modern boat...

Re: How to teach Low Brace & Low Brace Turn?

Yep. But the same strokes also work for break ins as well to control the arc, as well as flat water. The low brace turn isn't invalid, but I do think that it is ineffectual and a bit redundant these days since it is passive and works by a braking effect. I can't think of many, if any, practical sit...

Re: How to teach Low Brace & Low Brace Turn?

I love the low brace. In white water you watch the top ww guys catching the eddy and often they do not use a sweep or bow rudder, but turn the body with paddle in low brace position. Looks really stylish if done well. I think you are witnessing a stern rudder/squeeze (whatever you call it) with the...

Re: How to teach Low Brace & Low Brace Turn?

I think it is the old way to teach it. However, the older generation of coaches will not know any different as the coach update scheme the BCU runs is pointless and does not address such issues. So just accept that you are the new generation for now, until one day a young coach may be thinking the s...

If you can't pass the canoeing part of 2 star then you shouldn't be coaching full stop!! If you can kayak you can do the canoe strokes required.
