Re: Waist belt throw rope question

- On reflection, there is never any excuse on the bank to not have your throwline to hand. Your proper throwline, that is. What if you were to swim and loose your boat, but manage to get yourself to the bank, whilst your paddling buddies are in difficulty? Back injury can and does occur when the re...

Re: Uganda jabs

I can't remember the exact cost ( think it was something around €300). You need to give yourself 3-4 weeks minimum. 300euro...that'll be Ireland for ya!!! I flew to the UK to get all my jabs, the cost of flights and a weekend in Blighty to get my jabs worked out cheaper than getting them done in Ga...

Re: Waist belt throw rope question

In support for waist mounted throw bags, at the times when you may need a throw bag, you may not have your boat. If you’ve had to swim from hazard that has also caught out one of your paddling buddies, if you can get to the bank you may require a rope to help them. The same reason most people carry ...

Re: How much would a month or 2 trip to the Nile cost me?

Not sure what flights out there cost, but in terms of living day to day, you can do quite well for about 15-20USD per day. Maybe a bit more if you decided to do a safari or something like that.

Re: Best spraydeck?

Seconding the Snap dragon as best spraydeck, mines still solid after 4 year. It's been royally abused, I drag boats over it all the time (quickest way to rescue in my opinion), have brought it on numerous foreign trips and use it to keep gear in my boat whilst flying so it gets abused by luggage han...

Re: Irish WW - October half term

have a look at www.irishwhitewater.com, the two best areas to hit would be Wicklow or Kerry. There is plenty of paddling to be done in both if there is water. Wicklow would be closer to any ferries (coming into either dublin from Hollyhead or Roslare from Fishguard) and has a decent amout of rivers ...

Re: Helmets for Large head (61 cm)

The only helmets that fit me are the Yak Kontor (crap) and the Sweet Rocker. It was pricey but it fits. The predator helmets should fit on paper, but whatever way they were designed they just don't stay put on my head, (or on anyone else who tried it) so if the Rocker fits it is probably your best b...

Re: Incident reports- discussion

That is very true, but are such reports not published anyway? They are here in Ireland, not sure what the UK system is. But if they are, does it not make sense that people should be facilitated in learning from publicly available information. It could be distressing if people talk, but I would hope ...

Re: Incident reports- discussion

With all due respect Ian, I think you misread JK's post, he mearly suggested that it would be helpful if reports such as the one you described were accessible to paddlers so that they could possibly learn from it. Not that he thought that the internet should conduct such enquires. He explicitly said...

Re: I don't do politics . . .

Yes, a "hung" parliament would be the likely outcome of an election, but that does not mean that the parliament would be unable to make hard decisions. Look at Ireland, where a "hung" parliament is putting through a range of very unpopular measures. Coalition governments are common in most of the wo...

Re: I don't do politics . . .

The problem with PR is how do you move towards PR yet keep the link between MP and the area they represent. That is one problem I have never under stood, mainly because under PR their are still constituencies, and depending on the type if PR that is chosen it is likely their will be more than one M...

The system that the Lib Dems want to introduce does not involve lists, as Mike A states above, but rather a system like we use here in Ireland. http://en.wikipedia....

Re: I don't do politics . . .

What worries me about proportional representation is that I can end up with an MP that I didn't vote for, given that IMHO we have 1 reasonable candidate and two weasels, I wouldn't say that's good. In any democratic system that could happen, you don't always get who you personally vote for. Proport...

Be careful with it, 4-6 weeks could be right, but it was 4 months before I was back paddling after a subluxation, and another two months on and its still not 100% Not sure about the paddles, can't really imagine the length making much of a difference to be honest, but I could be wrong. Re: First Aid kit - What do we carry?

Most items on all lists seem pretty logical, I can't really think of a time on the river when you'd need burns gel though? Sunburn or friction burns (from ropes, rocks etc...) are possible when kayaking. As I said earlier I don't think people should limit their first aid kit to what they think they...

Re: First Aid kit - What do we carry?

The assumption running through this thread so far is that we will only ever use first aid on a river, and therefore that certain things that may be of less use on a river than normal should not be included in our first aid kit. But accidents can happen in more places than just a river, even on kayak...

Re: Has anyone tried SELECT kayak paddles?

I have not used the splits, but the normal blades a great. absolutely bullet proof, When I got them I was told that they'd last no time on rocky Irish rivers but two years later they are still going strong with only minimal signs of wear and tear.
